Oishii desu ne! – We eat in Japan Town a lot and had not tried Takara until tonight. What a great discovery! We both ordered the same $16 three-course dinner set. The sashimi was excellent and all the other traditional dishes were first rate! :.) Just before we were about to stay we couldn't eat another bite, we received our ice cream. Mmmmm...what a great way to end the meal. We're looking forward to returning soon for more traditional Japanese dishes.

standout in Japantown – There are no shortage of Japanese restaurants in Japantown but Takara is a cut above the rest. The sushi is fresh (on par with Hamano and company) and they serve the equivalent of Japanese comfort food (porridges and tea rice). A friend who lived in Japan for years tells me this is the only place he'll go for Japanese food in SF. The set menus are an extremely good value ($21 for a TON of good food) and the service is very efficient yet friendly.

Good Japanese Homestyle Cooking – We went here looking for some good, Japanese homestyle cooking and were very pleasantly surprised. The sushi was fresh, but the shiro maguro just melted in your mouth--very flavorful and fresh. We also had sukiyaki, which was cooked at the table. The sauce wasn't too sweet and the ingredients were also fresh and plentiful. The menu is fairly priced, especially given how many courses you get with your dinner.
