The technicians and hospital ambassadors are wonderful. However, the doctors are hit or miss ans some of the nurses are rude. Their no-visitor policies are also problematic and they put vulnerable people in a position where they sometimes cannot properly advocate for themselves or receive poor care. They need to up their game as to the way they treat and accommodate people with neurodivergence, disabilities or mental illness. I know they can do better.

I recently had surgery six days before Christmas on my knee to remove a non-cancerous tumour. It was a great experience. I loved the sweet nurses—even though I was a little emotional while under anesthesia and kept telling them how beautiful they were. They smiled at me and made me feel comfortable and cared for, even though I was very emotional at the time. I went to Southlake Regional Health Centre in crisis seeking safety and appropriate psychiatric care. What I received instead was dehumanization, misrepresentation, and a textbook example of how not to treat an autistic patient. I disclosed my autism, sensory sensitivities, and communication needs. These were documented and then ignored.
