It is racist and I'm completely appalled that it's trying to defend its racism.
Not only did the Missourian publish a racist cartoon, they defended the actions because the cartoonist has won two Pulitzer Prizes. See email response below. Not ok.
This paper is a platform for racism.
Publishing political cartoons that deal with differences in policy is one thing. Publishing a cartoon that is overtly racist and perpetuates harmful and incorrect stereotypes, then trying to pass it off as "presenting different perspectives" is irresponsible and racist. You should be ashamed of yourselves. But I have a feeling you're not. You are not journalists. You don't believe in truth and facts and informing the people. You believe in racist tropes and hate. And that makes you part of the problem.
The Southeast Missourian published a cartoon on 8/16/2020 that was tone deaf and maligning. Perpetuating hatred, racism, bigotry, and prejudice is not OK. The “cartoon” published on 8/16/2020 was disgusting and the Southeast Missourian needs to step up and acknowledge and learn from this. I am horrified by the blatant racism and ashamed for you. It's pathetic that you tried to defend your racism instead of reprimanding those involved with the decision. People with that kind of toxic mentality have no room in such a public business.
