The roots of the business are traced to Fred Smith's maternal grandfather who arrived in this country from Latvia in the early 1900's. He had emigrated from a section of Europe which has been claimed at various times by both Poland and Russia. In 1918, once in Springfield, Fred Kalman opened Kalman's Jewelry Store on Main Street next to Kennedy's Coffee House. I had just come from the Jewelry Exchange down the street and was told that I needed to send my watch back to the manufacturer to try to repair because they couldn't. Took it to Smith's to see if there was hope instead of dealing with shipping and waiting weeks for this watch to fly halfway around the world. Tom fixed it in 5 mins, maybe less. Great work by Fred repairing my father's Bulova watch. He had to search extensively to locate a coil. I am very happy that he was able to bring a family heirloom back to life. I highly recommend their repair services!

When an engagement ring I was given needed some alterations, they not only fixed it in record time so I could wear it to a family event, they did an outstanding job. A+ business. A mom and pop jewelry store with big business selections. We met with Andy in the Spring and he sat down with us for an hour and a half going over the diamond basics and what to look for, and we didn't even make a purchase! He had me sold from that day. When the time was right, I returned (making the commute from NY, where I'm currently living), and Tom helped me design the perfect ring. Couldn't be a more satisfied customer.
