Exceptional food! – I have been coming to Shabu Zen for over a year now and have never had a bad experience. It is one of my favorite restaurants now and I find myself craving the food often! I always sit at the counter and enjoy a hotpot meal. The service is good - the waiter/waitresses seem to help each other out so no one feels unattended too. The food is fresh, the meat is lean, and you control the level of spiciness. The mild kimchee broth is my favorite - spicy but not overly so. I'm not sure what the previous comment ... read more
Shabu-Fun! – This place ranks super high if you're in it just for fun. However, some practical issues that could use improvement: BIGGER BOWLS!...where are you supposed to put all the deliciously cooked food without spilling all over the table? BETTER DIPPING SAUCE!...the meat cooked up nice and tasty, but could have been much improved with a little sauce. MORE CORN!...the little corn segments were yum-yum, but so small-small (& no sauce :() That aside, the best features of Shabu-Zen are: GREAT SERVICE!...we had service with... read more
Hot spot for hot pots brings cook-it-yourself Japanese to Chinatown. – The Scene Ever wished you could cook your sushi just a little? Shabu-Zen replicates those trendy Tokyo restaurants where you cook raw meat, fish and vegetables yourself in a bubbling pot of broth. (Shabu-shabu, as this cooking is called, is named for the sound of chopsticks swishing meat in the soup.) Visit at lunch on a weekday to learn the drill, then come back on more convivial weekend evenings. The Food That's chicken broth simmering in the pot. Follo... read more
worst, absolutly the worst service – i have been going there for two to three years now. my friends and i would go there regularly and sometimes we have birthday parties there(which consists of more then ten ppl each time). when we first went the searvice was pretty outstanding, cinsider its in the chinatown area. but in the past two years we found the service to horrible. and now we bearly go. Since now that there is KAZE (another hotpot in chinatown) (Cheaper!! and better service) there is really no need for us to go there... read more
User review by ieatgrass – This place is awesome. I've been coming here regularly for over a year now, and I still crave the food from here (it may be the dipping sauce, but who knows). The service is okay, but the food is super fresh and delicious and the value is excellent. Once you try this place, you will be hooked.
GREAT! but where do I get that barbecue sauce! – this is one of my favorite restaurants in the city! And there's nothing to it! you boil slices of beef/chicken and vegetables, but it's so good! reasonably priced, service is a little slow but it's worth the wait! it's my daughter's favorite restaurant in the world! everytime we're in the city she wants to go. She used to share a plate with my wife but now insists on her own complete order. We've tried shabu shabu at home but without that chinese barbecue sauce for dipping, it... read more
great shabu shabu and great value – consistently great meals at decent prices. i always leave happy and full of delicious hot broth, veggies, and meat. both the seafood and meat dishes are tasty, and the do-it-yourself nature of the meal makes it a fun, active event. the smoothies are full of flavor and fruit.
Fresh, quality ingredients and fondue fun – The first good hot pot place in Boston since Genghis Khan in Newtonville closed, Shabu-Zen seems to understand that the most important thing is quality, fresh ingredients. Everything else falls into line. I prefer to order a la carte. I think you get a little more variety and it's a better deal. Be prepared to wait on a Friday or Saturday night between 7 and 8:30. Also highly recommended are the smoothies.
Love it! – I love Shabu-Zen. It's my favorite restaurant and I could eat there every week. It's such a good deal and the food is very good. The vegatables and meat were fresh and the restaurant is clean and the service is pretty good. Really, it doesn't require much service since you're cooking your own food - which is the fun part! For the comment that it doesn't compare with "LA or NY," just go back there.
