I came into SCORE proactively. I knew my vision and the type of person I enjoy working with. -\-\ So I read up on the mentors mentioned on the website. And when I applied, I wrote what I was there for and a list of people I thought were a match for me. I was prepared to meet/interview at least 6 mentors, but luckily Neil turned out to be a good match right on our first meeting. I study up what I want to focus before each meeting. I'm in the tourism industry in NYC. I went to score and they had no one with experience in tourism. So they paired me with someone with a background in showbiz, OK, what I do is partly entertainment. The first thing I was told was, create a business plan, you have to have a business plan, but zero guidance how to do that. I was directed to go look at business plans at the Science, Industry and Business Branch of NYPL. Next piece of sage advice was, go for the Chinese market, it's gonna be big! I have been happy with my Score Mentor experiences. I would recommend. I have an up-to date experienced professional mentor in my field with great skills .We meet on a regular basis to check on progress. PS I have also gone to some free seminars which are very diverse and some of their paid specialties which were also helpful. PPS It's a free service and they give their time generously, what's not to like?

You get what you pay for. If you're lucky. If not, they can waste your entire day by canceling at the last moment. No apologies, no acknowledgment that it's not okay. Just a shrug. "We are all volunteers here." I'd rather pay for a professional consultation.
