About this business

Cross the bridge into the dining room and prepare for a wonderful meal. The walls are covered in bamboo mats and the kitchen is open to the dining room. A private room is available for parties of 10-12. Order a sushi platter because it was voted Twin Cities Best Sushi by Minneapolis/St. Paul Magazine. Or try one of the many other signature dishes (some available in vegetarian versions) such as Japanese barbecue beef (yaki niku), tempura or any one of a variety of dishes with fish, chicken or beef. Teppanyaki (tableside chef)... read more

Fantastic Teppanyaki – Group of 20 went there day before Thanksgiving. All sat next to each other, 10 to a table, upstairs at the teppanyaki tables. Chef was great and good personality. Food was the best. Service was average due to waitress having to go downstairs all the time. Price is comparable to Ichiban's and Benihanna's. Worth every penny. Parking a pain if on a busy night. Small bar area not impressive

I really love this place – My husband and baby go to this restaurant montly. We recommend the grilled beef dishes and the sushi. We are not teppanyaki food fans so we cannot recommend what we are not into. The portions of the bento boxes are generous for a Japanese restaurant which is saying alot compared to the other Japanese restaurants in the area. The atmosphere is wonderful our daughter loves the place and she is only 16 months old. I love the staff as well always welcoming and accomodating. I hope this place does not c... read more

A Japanese Delight – The food was simply amazing. I ordered the sashimi appetizer with a steak bento. The service was average. The best night to go is Saturday night. For some reason the food tastes so much better, especially from the kitchen. I believe the two cooks on staff was an elderly Japanese woman and a young asian man.

Good food, but too noisy – The food and service were good, but the noise level was so high we couldn't hear the couple across the table and we eventually gave up trying to converse at all. I would not recommend this resturant if conversation is on your menu.

Fish tacos – Weve been going to saji ya since it first opened in the late 70's its always been prety good. last night it was outstanding! our server Mayu was very attentive and suggested the Salmon tiki tacos. YUM! Crispy wonton shells filled with a spicy salmon sushi they come in tuna too.Saji has a new head chef and its building a larger sushi bar.THANKS WE'LL BE BACK!

NOT WORTH IT! – I'm a big sushi fan and have sampled almost all the Japanese restaurants in the Twin Cities. This was by far the worst. The shrimp tempura roll tasted like it was over a week old -- chewy and unedible. The sushi did not appear or taste fresh. I would not waste my money on this place again -- we paid $80 for 2 (w/out alcohol). We left wishing we had dined at Dixie's next door.

Mediocre – I've had sushi at quite a few places around the twin cities and Saji-ya definitely underwhelmed me. The server didn't show up for 15 minutes after seating, he forgot part of our order, brought me a beer without asking for it and then didn't come back to give us change without having to hunt him down. As for the sushi, the seaweed was chewy and tough, the slices of nigiri unagi were undersized and lacking in sesame, the sockeye rolls were tiny. There was absolutely none of the presentation nor elaborate creativity ... read more

not even if it was free! – Bowl of noodles tasted like it was made from a 99-cent package of instant noodles. Inattentive server took 20 minutes to bring us the check from the time the table was cleared. Went with a friend, and both agree we'd never go back.

Better Sushi Chef Wanted – I was there specifically for the sushi. While the ingredients were fresh, a better sushi chef is obviously needed. I ordered the Imperial set (11 Nigiris, 3 Tekkamakis and 3 Kappamakis). The Tekkamaki (suppose to contain tuna) was somehow replaced by something with salmon. The Nigiris looked amateurish. I think the chef needs to practice more on how to make better rice pads. The hint of horseradish that is supposed to be inside each of Nigiri sushi was missing. The chef also threw in a couple of un... read more
