In 1971, the Lettuce Entertain You empire began at this humble eatery. The menu is bare-bones American fare and the atmosphere is gritty in a tongue-in-cheek kind of way. R.J.'s is well known for the huge salad bar, but it sounds more appealing than it typically looks. Instead, stick with a burger, a huge bowl of chili or the barbecue brisket sandwich. The most unusual thing about this joint is what you get on the side. No French fries here. All sandwiches come with homemade potato chips, which comes as something of a shock ... read more

The most DISGUSTING breakfast sandwich I have ever had... It was a 2” rock hard egg on a hamburger bun with a Kraft American cheese single.. for a whopping $7! 🤮
Old place that never gets old!! Great burgers!!
The service was super slow and oue fries were cold. You'd think that it taking so longe we'd get hot fries. But we didn't and it wasn't even busy. It took like 10 minutes for my soda to come back from being refilled
Been a Star for Chicago for years
Awesome salad bar. This place started it all when it comes to big salad bar. Also great burgers. An institution since 1971, the first Lettuce Entertain You restaurant & you just have to check it out... 70’s music all the time...
We had a party of 3. Service was excellent & food was tasty. We ordered a French Dip, a Patty Melt, & a Cheeseburger and all items were delicious! Will definitely go again!
Great throwback music and some of the best diner classics and milkshakes in the city!!!
I have been coming here since the 70s. When I was a kid, I couldn’t stand the salad bar except when someone would sneak me melon, and I swear there used to be some kind of chocolate mousse. Now that I’m an adult, I realize that it’s one of the best in the world. So much to choose from. Really fresh. In addition to that, the food is consistently great. Some of the best burgers. Great service. The same decor since I was a kid. A great place to stop for a bite after going to the zoo or the notebaert museum. Or before. Or during... read more
