Research online what you are buying before you buy it... Stick with the basics (not the trendy) and be willing to pay a little more for well constructed gear that will last... Become a coop member.
REI is every campers dream store! They have tons of goodies from tents, to water filters, to cool head lights. They are a bit pricy however from the looks of it they seem to have quality items.
