I met Helmut about a year ago as I was passing through LA on my way to Joshua Tree with my partner, Elly. What started as a "let's try to pop in before the shop closes" at the end of the day turned into over an hour of stories, abridged life history, and a few photos. His 6'2” frame and solid handshake are permanently imprinted on my memory.
