STAY AWAY! RUDE PEOPLE – Can I give a negative rating?? We used to love going to the Pongal in Upper East Side. Unfortunately, it was sold last year and the one on Lexington does NOT match up. Food is not bad but the servers are the rudest anywhere. During our last visit there, my husband signed the credit card receipt (and left a very healthy tip), the server showed up to pick it up while we were still sitting there. To our surprise, he opened the holder, pulled out the receipt to check the tip! When my husband inquired wit... read more
Not what I thought – I liked their decor, so I went in, but the food sucked! You can tell that things were NOT fresh, and they were being cheap with the "masalas". Don't recommend to anybody.
Soggy Dosa's – My cousin and I went in for some Dosa's, and it came out soggy and disgusting. The Sambar was cold and thick. I called over the waiter to change the dosa's, and he gave me an attitude as if I asked for his kidney. Don't waste your money here!
Disappointment – To my dismay, the food at pongal was not up to the mark. It was really a very terrible experience for myself and my colleague and never to return back to place where waiter do not hear their customers. I had specifically asked to make my dosa crispy and spicy and it came out soft, extremely spicy and with cold sambar and spoiled coconut chutney. My colleague also had hard time finishing his food as he was also not too fond of their taste. waste of money and wait. I will def not recommend this place to anyone... read more
amazing food – best dosa's crepes that you could have ever eaten The rava dosa is better than you could have eaten in India also. The shrikhand is authentic,The best vegetable biryani I loved the food It is your everyday eating place and so affordable Great portion size ,fantastic food and affordable price seems to work in these recession times,The service is ok but there is always a line waiting to get your table,A must eat
Lovely vegetarian spot, also great for gluten-free – There must be some misguided competition among the restaurants in this neighborhood that cause them to post negative reviews about each other. Note that the reviewers sometimes even copy and paste the identical inflammatory comments for several of these restaurants. Pongal is lovely. Even non-vegetarians come back for the 'pancakes' that wrap flavorful fillings of potatoes, onions, and other ingredients. Note that most or all of these dishes are gluten-free (check with the... read more
Surprised by so many negative reviews – I happen to think that the food at Pongal is excellent, and while the service isn't fawning, it certainly has never been rude. Granted, some dishes are slightly less spicy than I would like, but they have always complied with my requests to add an extra bit of heat. I've been here with unregenerate carnivores and they've enjoyed themselves. Their breads and thali platters are delicious. I'm also partial to their whole moong beans and, of course, their dosas. For those who enjoy a bit o... read more
Worst place – i have no doubt n saying this is the worst place i ever tried for food.very unprofessional people.Nepali manager is very rude.food is very suboptimal, place looks unhygenic(saw roches),saw waiters picking there nose.gross. would never go there again.if u guys have concern about hygeine, care about ur money, want to have decent meal--then this is not the place for u.if there was a star less than one i would choose that
Authentic food but service is lacking – For the record, I am South Indian and grew up eating the food that Pongal specializes in. When craving homestyle food while I was living in New York, Pongal was among the places I would go. I found the food, particularly the dosas, to be quite worthy and authentic. The North Indian options aren't as good, but then again if you want North Indian food it makes little sense to eat at a South Indian restaurant. I do, however, agree with a lot of the criticisms found in other reviews. While... read more
