If you happen to be using a garbage disposal system, you will need to have your septic tank pumped out more regularly. This is because the extra material being dumped into the tank will cause it to fill more rapidly.

Were you aware that consistent usage is the key to a well-balanced septic tank? In fact, some experts recommend doing laundry, washing dishes, and showering on a regular schedule spaced throughout the day to avoid flooding the system with water.

Be careful what you plant near your septic tank and drainfield. Trees and shrubs have extensive root systems that seek out moisture and nutrients in the drainage pipes, and these roots can cause blockages. Opt for grasses and other plants with shallow root systems instead.

When installing 4” perforated pipes for leach fields, they should have at least a ¼” slope for every ten feet and make sure that the perforations face down. The holding trench should be between 18” and 36” wide (24” inches is the standard) and no less than 18” nor more than 30” deep.
