Great soups! Old Wives Tales is a nice family restaurant that serves the best vegetarian, vegan and wheat free food in town. They recently donated some food for a volunteer appreciation party I attended. 3 great soups, 2 delicious salads, and a big bowl of rolls.

By far one of SE Portland's Best – Tis a lovely place with fine people in all capacities. The food is exquisite and of such remarkable variety. My wife and I love this place. Along with the good music and friendly staff I find it a fine retreat and relaxation place for lunch or dinner when we are visiting Portland.

Yummy, fun and very Portland – Great place to dine with friends who like trying new takes on old favorites. Fun and interesting menu, with a diner feel. Yummy, healthy options make eating out easy. Try the Hungarian mushroom soup! Our waiter was so sweet and explained at least 5 different items on the menu to us...everything sounded so good. Will go back again for sure.

A great vegetarian restaurant I've been going to Old Wives' Tales for years. They have a good menu, and reasonably priced (although when wild-caught fish is on the menu, it can get expensive). For people with food intolerance, their menu includes all kinds of options to avoid wheat, dairy, or other common food problems.######The Hungarian mushroom soup is their signature dish, and definitely worth a try. ######This is a mostly vegetarian restaurant, although you can get chicken, fish, or maple bacon. Other than maple bacon, ... read more

awsome breakfast – Every time I go to Portland, I stop by Old Wives Tales & get a container of Hungarian Mushroom soup to go even if I can't stay for a meal. The reviewers who mention bland food neglect to notice that condiments are available. This is part of what makes this restaurant so wonderful- everyone can go and enjoy their meal out, no matter their food requirements or restrictions. You add what you like. Holly, the owner, has been nothing but gracious to me & my friends & family and I can't wait to return.

Good for families with small kids, food Okay, good choice for special dietary needs – I've eaten at OWT many times. My wife likes the soup and salad bar. My kids (6 y/o and 4 y/o) like the fact they can play. Regarding the food: My wife reports she has always been pleased with the soup and salad bar. While I also eat at the bar, more often then not I choose from the menu. I can't say I have ever eaten anything from the menu that I can rate above "average". There have been a few times I have been very disappointed in the food... read more

tasty predictable food – I am so surprised by all the negative reviews. This place has been a constant Sunday breakfast place for me and my family for years now. The food has been consistently well prepared and flavorful and while sometimes when slammed the service isn't 100% the other times they aren't busy more than makes up for it as the staff is amazingly but not overly-attentive. And, they are always friendly and seem to enjoy having kids around, hence the playroom. I've tried a variety of items on the menu (mainly brea... read more

Pretty much okay when everywhere else is crowded and you are a tightwad – I go here a lot. PIcking out a dish as a newbie is very russian roulette style, but the variety ensures that in mixed company most everyone can find something to suit a craving. As a vegetarian myself allow me to warn against ordering the "tofu scramble" as it resembles something a mother bird might v0mit for her young. Indian burrito with lentil dal is quite good. Salad bar is great but the price is a rip off. Side salads are way lame and rather lackl... read more
