Old Wives’ Tales

About this business

Old Wives' Tales has been open since 1980, offering a multi-ethnic menu of vegetarian, chicken and seafood dishes. The extensive menu, including many small plates and a la carte choices, makes it possible to select a range of dining experiences from light meals to multi-course feasts. The restaurant is famous for its Salad Bar and for its Hungarian Mushroom Soup, which is always available on the Soup Bar, along with fresh Clam Chowder and two choices of vegan, gluten-free vegetable soups that change daily. Virtually everythi... read more

The manager, Tom, and the staff at Old Wives Tale are very nice and friendly. And the food is fresh, healthy, and tasty. I'm not sure what is wrong with Daniel B. and Seita P. They gave one star for their rating? They must have come in together and been disappointed with each other and their miserable lives.

Microwaves and corporate food distributors – I do not recommend the food at the Old Wive's Tale. The food is supposed to be "local" and "organic" and all sort of BS like that. But in reality is is hormone educed corporate food producers like Cisco, and seriously, who prepares food in a microwave. Seriously save your money, with any luck this place will go under and then maybe the crazy lady that runs the place will stop peppering craigslist with adds for new workers. " Ugh No Thanks"

Consumer beware if you have food allergies! Twice I've received a suspect meal and ate a bite, only to discover they got the meal wrong. This is a serious no-no for a restaurant that features recipes that are free of wheat, or gluten, soy, or dairy, etc. I had so much confidence in this place upon reading their menu; now, I will never go there again. I was sick for a week from having eaten a food allergen that I was specific with the waiter that I could not have. Only two other people were in the restaurant, so there's no ex... read more

This is one of my family's favorite places. The kiddos love the playroom and I love being able to eat real food while they play. I always get the Hungarian Mushroom soup with the salad bar and the hubs usually gets the Japanese veggie pancake or something from the specials. We always get the pumpkin pudding for dessert. It has tofu in it and the kids love it. (Don't tell them it has tofu in it! Haha. You'd never know, it's delish.) It's a really low key place and feels homey. Love!

REAL food - finally! – This place is awesome! That's relative, so I'll break down the awesomeness for you: 1. REAL food. No half-assed thrown-together stuff here, my friends. The cooks here are REAL cooks who cook REAL food REALLY well. The food tastes better than homemade - it's fresh and thoughtfully put together. The soups are all vegetarian and even as a meat-lover, I love their soups. 2. REAL people. From the waitstaff to the cooks to the owner who is in there working her rear off; they are genuinely kind and thoughtful... read more

A lifelong Portland favorite! – I've been going to Old Wives' Tales since I was a kid and (lucky me!) now live just a few short blocks away. I've rediscovered it as an adult and am happy to report that it's everything I remembered it to be as a kid. The staff is warm & welcoming, the food is fantastic, and the ambiance is classic Portland casual. A number of my friends are gluten free, vegetarian and vegan, and it's great to have a menu where they aren't relegated to just one option (if they're lucky). The OWT menu is tasty,... read more

Bad management – So I got a little bit of an inside scoop on this restaurant. The food is sub par at best. Owner makes all these claims that this place is Organic and Locally grown. however all the food is from a large agri-business and is prepared in a microwave. Now, the way the the manager/owner Holly Hart, treats her staff makes Old wives tale locally known to be one of the worst places to work in Portland Or. go to shamelessrestaurants. com and search "old wives tale" or "Holly Hart" Over a thousand of disgruntled emplo... read more
