About this business

Old Wives' Tales has been open since 1980, offering a multi-ethnic menu of vegetarian, chicken and seafood dishes. The extensive menu, including many small plates and a la carte choices, makes it possible to select a range of dining experiences from light meals to multi-course feasts. The restaurant is famous for its Salad Bar and for its Hungarian Mushroom Soup, which is always available on the Soup Bar, along with fresh Clam Chowder and two choices of vegan, gluten-free vegetable soups that change daily. NO CHARGE FOR THE PRIVATE DINING ROOM – Both the business that I work for and a non-profit group that I volunteer with have regular breakfast, lunch and dinner meetings in their private dining room. Since they do not require a minimum amount to be spent by each person, some of us just have a bowl of one of their wonderful soups, while others really chow down! It can be hard to find parking around many restaurants, but there is lots of free parking all around. In any large group of people, there are going to be some with spec... read more

Ruined our Saturday – We will never go back to this restaurant. Never, never again. Hostess sat us at the nosiest table in the restaurant where is right by kid's play area. After drinks were served, they didn't take our order and left us in the noise for 20 min. Finally I stood to call server and asked her to move our table to quieter area. Then another server (Older man) came and move us to only two tables down. (Basically the same noisy area.). We felt very insulted because many many tables right in the middle of restauran... read more

Food is average, owner treats staff poorly. – After hearing the owner screaming at and berating her staff we won't be back. We had the BLT and the Huevos Rancheros , all of which were quite good but the atmosphere was awful. Much rather spend our money time at any number of equally good or better places in Porltand that don't scream at their staff in full hearing of the patron.

restaurant Great place for families. There is a play room for small children. Can get a bit noisy, but they also have a smaller dining area in the rear reserved for adults--cozy, mostly booths and small tables, and quieter. Electic menu. Good selection of vegetarian dishes along with regular dishes, but what I go for is the homemade soups. The hungarian goulash is the best.

varied menu I knew Old Wives Tales by reputation long before I moved to the Portland area and it was one of the first restaurants I visited when I arrived. The food is consistently good. The atmosphere is casual and they have a play room for your kids. Try the Hungarian mushroom soup - it's spectacular.

Be careful! – Not a bad place to eat, with the following warnings considered: -The Hungarian Mushroom soup is roughly 30% sour cream and is anything but fresh on most days. -Nearly everything, minus the meat and sandwiches is microwaved. -Most salad bar salads are 'walk-in specials': comprised of old salad dressings and and prep ingredients that are not selling. -Everything is way overpriced. Eat before 4:30 for a dollar off the same item, if it is on both lunch and dinner menus. The seafood is kept on ice (not frozen) until... read more

Food was fine, interior needs a lot. – I had a pretty good meal, but the decor brings to mind a cafeteria or an old folks' home. They could stand to make it a lot more restaurant-y or cafe-ish.

Great for kids, good service, easy to eat healthy – Food was bland and just average. My 2 yr old was happily entertained the entire time in the play room, which of course was a bonus for us. Because the menu itmes give a list of ingredients, you can figure out if something is going to fit into your particular way of eating (low fat, gluten free, vegetarian). The food was pretty good, but not stand out. The cost is a little high for what you get, and the salad bar is lacking. I may go back if I'm facing one of those nights wh... read more
