??Oba! Restaurante y Refresqueria opened in Portland, Oregon in October 1997. Owner Steve McLain, who had spent the 1980s managing and owning restaurants in high-profile markets such as the Bay Area and Los Angeles, had already completed a successful purchase and turnaround of Hall Street Grill in a Portland suburb ??? a restaurant that continues to thrive under his ownership today. Eager to open a second venture in a more urban setting, McLain chose the heart of the Pearl District. At the time, this gritty, industrial area ... read more

Mmmmm, yummmy!!!! – Love the food, always! Great atmosphere and always a good time! The specials are always to die for delicious!
RUDEST hostess/waitstaff ever... – After hearing all the buzz, I finally made reservations (well in advance). We arrived 10 minutes early, only to be completely ignored by the hostess. After standing in front of her for about 5 minutes without acknowledgement (that magazine she was reading sure must have been good), she finally raised her head, told us it would be "awhile" and we should take a seat. While waiting, I witnessed her grab a waitress, point to my mom, and whisper something in her ear that caused them both to snic... read more
Good food and great service – My wife and I always have a great experience here. Get the macadamia nut crusted swordfish if they have it. Make reservations and ask to have Andrew as your waiter.
Highly Over-rated, Extemely Over-priced – I had heard many great things about this restaurant; perhaps the bar was set too high. I went to Oba! with a party of 5, which is certainly manageable for even a novice server. After waiting an hour for food (early on a somewhat quiet Saturday night), feeling unattended! to (it was tough to get refills), I was very unimpressed! with my unexciting! chicken dish for which I certainly payed too much. Overall, Oba! definitely lacked an exclamation point and could be described as as unimp... read more
Grass was greener on the other side – I met up with some co-workers this past week at the bar at OBA. The group was looking for a celebration location that had a decent happy hour. OBA seemed like the choice, as Portland city grill would be packed with who knows what. From start to finish it was not up to our expectations. We felt as though OBA had been going through the same motions for some time (years) and their food and service suffered from lack of interest. After a gruling hour we were walking up the street and happend... read more
Oh my...fabulous! – We picked Oba for our anniversary and were not dissapointed. From the moment we walked in to till we signed the the check, we had a wonderful dining experience. The hostess was very friendly and made great recommendations! The cocktails were fresh and tasty, the crab cake appetizers had perfect taste, texture, sauce, and presentation! Our steak and salmon were perfectly cooked, exactly as we ordered. I've never tasted such succulent salmon at any resturant. If you're looking for rare salmon and have been ... read more
Great food, Great Service, Great Atmosphere – This restaurant came highly recommended and it was incredible, everything we were told and more! We loved the Rock Shrimp and Seafood Tamales, the Caesar Salad was excellent, and the Chocolate Decadence desert (with cinnamon ice cream) was to die for. Will definitely will go back. This is one of Portland's finest restaurants, in my top 5. Consistent in all areas, and we noticed people "dining al fresco" outside but we prefered the booths inside. Highly recommended, the staff was ... read more
Slow slide continues, spotty service – Oba has become a cliche of itself. What started as an inventive, fun, swanky hip hangout serving interesting and delicious fare has become a Pearl District mainstay that appeals mostly to tourists and the sentimental... On a recent Saturday night, we were suprised by the spotty service and un-imaginative menu. We had a good sized party, 14, and we'd made reservations well in advance. While trying to enjoy the happy hour in the bar pre-dinner, the staff could barely find time to take dri... read more
AMAZING – Walking into OBA you feel as if you've stepped into the coolest place on the planet. Going into a place with an adventurous menu seems to intimidate me at times. However our server Peggy won our hearts over and made it simple for us. She talked about the menu and sustainability. How OBA supports local farmers and buys not just local, but hormon free, free range and organic. She put such a unique twist on our visit you got the feeling she really loved OBA. And regardless of how busy it was she was so collected and m... read more
