In 1969, Michael Vasilantone patented the first rotary screen printing equipment specifically created to produce multicolored designs on garments, like bowling shirts. Independent artists and printers used the machine to launch a new fad, printed T-shirts, and that fad has lasted more than 40 years.
A flash layer is a double application of ink, and is used on darkly colored fabrics. This process helps the colors stand out and look better. It is standard in the industry and adds negligible cost to the order.
Looking to print a large amount of shirts or other items? The you'll want to invest in a conveyor dryer. A 6' to 8' long dryer with a 24" conveyor can usually handle about a dozen shirts in an hour, while an 8' to 10' dryer with a 30" conveyor can handle twice as many.
There are several theories concerning the origin of the word "squeegee." The screen printing implement may have imitatively derived its name from the sound it makes; or from the old English word "squeege," which means "to press or squeeze."
One of the more common uses for a squeegee is window cleaning, but you don't want to use those for screen printing. A screen printing squeegee is much thicker and less flexible, and specially made for use on printing screens.
Screen printing is often the best choice for promotional materials, whether that means stickers, signs, or t-shirts. The thick layer of ink possible with this printing method means logo colors will stay vivid, and the process also allows for flexibility in size and shape of the materials being printed.
Despite being around for quite some time, screen printing has yet to be bested by other, more modern printing techniques. This is because screen printing produces a durable outcome that stands up well to long-term use.
