Funny how Asian institutions don't get the concept of answering your questions like what's in your food. They just play dumb. What if you have a corn or soy allergy? What if you want to make sure you're not eating GMOs? Honestly, their gelato tasted like it had corn syrup in it. Maybe I should start an ice cream/gelato place with ice cream/gelato made with no chemical, GMO, or other crap in it. Unfortunately, there really isn't an ice cream you can buy that doesn't have some kind of crap in it. Have to invest in an ice cream... read more

I'll take that one, and that one, and that one and... – What is there not to love about the adorable, gooey, pint sized-ness of a mochi ice cream ball? Sure, you could go to Trader Joe's or Whole Foods and get the same thing, but the Mikawaya store offers those standard freezer flavors and much more, like cookies and cream, red bean, hazelnut, toasted almond and plum wine "mochilato" (gelato and mochi). Get one of each flavor with every intention of sharing it with your friends, and then eat them all yourself before realizin... read more

a historic ice-cream shop!!! – i saw a show about Little Tokyo nearly 10 years ago. The reporter interviewed the old lady who passed away a few years ago. That lady was the mochi ice-cream inventor. She was a really sweet lady. Little Tokyo is now a booming, modern city. Her ice-cream still holds great value. Try it, you won't be disappointed!

Editorial Review – With a tagline that boasts the "finest name in Japanese pastries since 1910," this J-Town sweet shop is where neighborhood regulars and tourists go for fresh batches of the famed mochi dessert.

Home of Mochi Ice Cream – This Japanese sweet shop has been family owned for three generations. It's the perfect end to a visit to Little Tokyo, choose one of their mochi ice creams (my favorite is mango or coffee) or try one of their mountainous shaved iced concoctions. They also offer a variety of ice creams (including green tea) and fresh gelato. Mikawaya is also known for their traditional Japanese confections including mochi filled with red bean paste and red bean pancakes along with innovative twists like mochi filled ... read more

Where it all begins – Go to Little Tokyo Plaza. Drop by Mikawaya and have a go at their freshly-made mochi ice cream balls. Soft and powdery, they're just like Mikawaya's boxed supermarket ones but FRESH. Pick up a box of beautifully shaped mochi cakes filled with red or white beans (wagashi), meant to be served with green tea. Or have a scoop of Japanese spumoni: green tea, red adzuki bean, and vanilla ice cream all swirled together. Delish!
