Having your water heater inspected should be part of your Spring and Fall maintenance checklist along with chimneys, gutters and your HVAC system. You can generally schedule these check-ups with any plumber or water heater sales and repair shop.

Once your new water heater is installed, you will need to do a little maintenance. If it is a tank-style water heater, you will need to drain it and clean out any accumulated sediment.

Are tankless water heaters worth the savings? In homes that consume under 41 gallons, they are between 24-34% more efficient. That goes up to 27-50% if there is a unit at each hot water outlet. It will eventually pay for itself.

Should you get an extended warranty for your water heater? That's up to you. Check the warranty provided by the manufacturer to learn about the length of coverage. If you don't think it's sufficient, then an extended one might be a good idea.

Before your new water heater can be put into service, it will need to pass inspection and be certified by your local code compliance office. Failing to have this done can result in unwanted fines.

Did you know that you can add extras to a tankless water heater? Extra heating elements are available that can heat the water from both the top and the bottom to speed the process up and reduce waiting time.

If you are looking to save money over the long run, then tankless water heaters are a better choice. Tank-style heaters need a constant heat source to keep water at the designated temperature.

If your water heater tank is in an uninsulated area of your home, you may want to consider picking up an insulating blanket designed specifically for these appliances. It can help protect it and keep energy costs under control.

Is your family growing? It may be time for a new water heater. You'll find more hot water is needed for these daily activities: laundry, house cleaning, bathing, and washing dishes.
