Rattan chairs, high ceilings with slow moving fans and potted palms all lend an air of mystique to this French-Vietnamese dining spot. Expansive and elegant, it also features an attractive upstairs lounge. The food is spicy, pungent and well prepared. Try the Tamarind Soup to start, then move onto the house special Ca Chien Saigon-whole red snapper with a spicy sauce. A good wine list is featured and strong Vietnamese coffee will complete your meal. The service is mostly efficient, although at peak times it can be a little s... read more

Very average food for too high prices. – Very disappointing. I went for Restaurant Week with my girlfriend and our meal wasn't great. The food is dull and uninspired; it tastes and is presented like your average corner place, but is far more expensive. I won't be back, though the ambience and service are pleasant.
Beautiful upscale trendy and yet NOT Manhattan pretentious!! – My boyfriend and I have been here several times alone and with friends and we consider it to be our perfect NY dining out experience. Creative cocktails, tasty dishes, great atmosphere...can't say enough...highly recommended...
Beautiful atmosphere, good price, great value – me and my girl been here, it's look even better than in the picture. i love it, i will be back here again!
Extremely attentive staff, great food/drinks, perfect space – Le Colonial is the perfect place for a corporate cocktail party. The hostess, Aimee, was wonderful- extremely accomodating and friendly to boot. The space was the perfect size for our 70 person crowd and the staff successfully kept the food coming and the drinks flowing (and during restaurant week no less). Highly recommended.
This atmospheric Vietnamese veteran continues to draw the Midtown crowds. – The Scene Arching palms, lazy ceiling fans, moody lighting and haunting black-and-white photos of colonial Vietnam may make you feel like putting on a white suit and riding off to the poppy plantation, or planting the seeds of revolution. It's a popular place, and at peak hours you may be dispatched to the upstairs tropical lounge. Meanwhile, the charming staff handles things with aplomb. The Food Over the years the cooking has lost some of its explo... read more
Jumped the Shark – Le Colonial used to be one of my favorite restaurants in each and every city where they serve French Vietnamese fare. Unfortunately, I had a horrible experience dining in the lounge this weekend. The service was slow and disrespectful at best. When my boyfriend and I complained about the taste of the shrimp soup, we were met with indifference. The depreciation of the quality of the food and service was noticeable to say the least. There are too many other good restaurants in New York to bother with this es... read more
Sit Upstairs – Definitley dine upstairs. The couches are great to sit on, the food is awesome- (especially the seared tuna), and the wine list is awesome. Its an extremely bohemian and layed back to room to hang out all night in and the waitress with the blonde hair (who has been there forever) is incredibly sweet and wonderful. I love it here.
Worth A try – Enjoyed a nice, intimate lunch here and although it was pricey it was worth the visit. Solid vietnamese with a distinct french influence (some inconsistencies but nothing major). Unlike earlier reviews, I had good-great service here. I would recommend the Richard Bourgeois Sancerre if you're looking for a nice, crisp white.
Fantastic Service Philippe!!!! – We just started exploring our new neighborhood when we found a gem..Le Colonial. We didn't have a reservation but were greeted warmly by the maitre d' even though the restaurant was very busy.We were seated at a table which was close to the door, I asked the maitre d' if it would be possible to sit further back. He again accomodated graciously..we asked him his name (Philippe) as his manner and professionalism made us think he was the owner.Every restaurant should have someone as polite and ef... read more
