French tennis player Rene Lacoste was nicknamed, "The Alligator," by the American press after he took a bet with the captain of the French Davis Cup team over a suitcase made of alligator skin. The captain promised to give him the suitcase if he won an important game for the team. He did win and the name "alligator" stuck because of his tenacity and ability to beat his opponents.
