Dr. Laasko was recommended to me by a friend, and I have had a great experience at her office for the last six months. She is extremely knowledgeable, very thorough in her descriptions of treatment options and possible outcomes, and her receptionist is very responsive.
Doctor has found a niche with specific conditions and takes lots of insurances so she stays busy, but in-depth diagnoses and listening is not her skill. If you know what you need and are fine with a conveyer belt approach to medicine then great. BUT her office manager or receptionist or whatever is a MISERABLE WAKING NIGHTMARE OF A PPERSON. The doctor doesn't really seem to be into diagnosing any conditions, but she prescribes the drugs I want so that's cool. Her receptionist is one of the rudest people I've ever met. I've met rattlesnakes with better personalities.
AVOID THS DOCTOR My experience with the office was unbelievable. The receptionist should be reported to the NY Dept of Health and fired immediately. I was referred to Dr. Laakso by the organization I work for. I have told them about my experience, and they assured me they would not be recommending anyone else going forward. Dr. Laakso is terrific. She has a busy office (because, unlike most psychiatrists, she takes almost all insurances), but that means she has a great deal of experience with the medications she prescribes. She is hardly a "pill pusher" — in fact, she often recommends smaller dosages than other doctors — and feels that lifestyle changes (sleep schedule, etc.) are as important as drugs in treating psychiatric issues. Listen to her advice.
I saw Dr. Laakso for help with a bout of severe anxiety- She gave me samples of Vraylar, a brand new drug to treat bipolar disorder, which made my anxiety much worse. I am NOT BIPOLAR- When I failed to improve, she became angry and told me that no other psychiatrist would have agreed to accept me as a patient, as I was "so off." I never went back, and would warn anyone else to avoid her- She is out of her mind and a danger to patients-
She is extremely busy and she will not dedicate entirely to yourself. Psychological issues are serious and she prescribes drugs like candies.
When I came to her 9 years ago my medication dosage was too high. I was concerned that my health was deteriorating but, she told me that under no uncertain terms was that the case. I needed less medication and to make some lifestyle modifications. At her urging, I starting going to bed early and rising early. I exercised outside in the sunlight all year and gave up alcohol. I credit much of my happiness to her encouragement. She has always made it very clear to me that I am very capable.
