About this business

This looks like just a sushi bar, but the place cooks it up like a restaurant. It may be the only place you will want to eat Japanese food in Portland. A part of a small local chain of Japanese food restaurant, this decor at this location is minimalist in nature; small spaces and simple, contemporary dining tables. The menu features a little bit of everything Japanese, and servings are generous. The Pork Katsu, a breaded and fried steak, is served with rice, Miso and salad. There's also a lot of options in Nigiri Sushi and S... read more

Part of a chain of Japanese restaurants, this swinging Lloyd Center sushi joint packs 'em in. – In Short This restaurant is all about getting people in and fed in a hurry. Movie-goers and solo business diners pack into the small, sunken dining room. A dizzying array of Japanese specialties, from udon noodle soup to teriyaki, is available in addition to a standard list of sushi choices. Dinner items include broiled salmon, teriyaki and yakitori skewers. Shashimi is fresh, but rolls and nigiri are less inspiring.

amazing tuna sashimi! – I went here on the advice of some friends. I went during a Friday afternoon and got seated promptly. I had some of the best tuna sashimi I've had in a long time. The tuna was glistening and just melted in my mouth. I also was excited to find another of my favorite dishes, cold soba noodles--so refreshing on a hot day. The Unagi I had was also excellent too. I can't wait to go back and try the ramen noodles with miso and more sashimi.

Good Sashimi – The spider roll is an interesting adventure but I always focus on the sashimi when I go to Koji. I have not had fresher tuna anywhere. I didn't try a lot of the cooked food, but people were eating it. The tempura was OK, but the overall odor of the cooking oil does not mesh well with the sushi and sashimi. That said, I will go back. Maybe they will have a new kitchen fan by then.

A place you want to frequent regularly – An up-to-date review for Koji Osakaya is desperately needed despite the harsh remarks made previously. It wasn't more than 2 monthes since my first visit to this joint, and I have still enjoyed my many visits to Koji. The lunch combo's are delicately made and, at the same time, at an affordable cost. The overall taste of its "cooked menu" is much above standards in Portland, whilst the Katsu-Pork Curry Rice brings back vivid memories of popular diner joints in metropolitan Tokyo. possibly the worst Japanese food I've ever eaten – Food was simply terrible. service was average. Maybe I've eaten at too many excellent Japanese and sushi restaurants in my career, but this was absolutely horrid. Miniscule rubbery sashimi, overcooked shoe-leather steak, mushy vegetable tempura, stale (to the point of being brown) avocado in the Cali roll. What a shame.

What I've been looking for.. – My girlfriend and I have been trying out different Sushi places in the Portland area lately and Koji Osakaya is the best we've found. Service is always great! I have a feeling people leaving negative reviews about this restaraunt would be negatively reviewed as customers if that was a practice. The food is also just great. I always end up leaving stuff and quite satisfied with the quality. Thier combination plates are fantastic.

Where is the service – We love the food here...the service is horrible. We left one time after waiting 15 minutes just to get a menu. The sushi is fresh and creative though. The waitress forgot to order my boyfriend's noodles and didn't even take it off the bill. I would avoid this place unless you live near by and have a long time to wait.

Good sushi in close quarters – We recently made a trip to Koji for some sushi. The variety is quite extensive--we ended up ordering Tamago, California Rolls, Bagel Maki, and Red Snapper sushi. I've definately had better tamago....the egg was very bland. The California rolls made up for this, as they were quite tasty. For two people with sodas, we paid $18. Not too bad for an evening of sushi. The service was a bit unorganized--we had three different waitresses trying to help us. Parking was also quite difficult.

Standard - average – Good standard Americanized Japanase fare. The buckwheat soba noodles were good, but don't order it with beef. The special Oregon roll was also good. Service was very slow. There are certainly better options for Japenese food.
