About this business

This charming restaurant is a little bit of Japan in Newport Beach. Glass walls and high ceilings give it a very open, airy feeling. The clientele comes for this as well as for the food. There is a sushi bar where you can sit, or you can get comfortable in the main dining room while you are served beautiful dishes like fresh fish, Japanese rice and vegetables, and delicious soups. Sip Japanese beer and sake or order a less exotic bottle of wine from the extensive list with bottles from $8-$75.

DO NOT EAT HERE! – I entered the restaurant with high expectations, and left beyond disappointed. We had a large group of people for a friend's bday, and our reservation was for 7:30PM. They started serving us at 9:30PM, half an hour before they close at 10:00PM. The waitors were rushing us out, cleaning up our dishes before we finished eating. One busboy had the nerve to take my friend's plate, and toss the remainder of her food onto the grill. All in all, we waited 2 hours to eat, then finished our food, or tried to, withi... read more

Rudest Staff in any Japanese / Sushi Bar ever encountered anywhere in North America – I have been enjoying Sushi restaurants all over North America; including Vancouver BC, Seattle WA, Miami FL, Boston MA, Chicago IL, San Fransisco CA, Los Angeles CA, etc etc, and have been eating Sushi and Sashimi since about 1984 and never in my life have I ever encountered a staff which is so rude. Everyone from the Hostess to the main Sushi chef were void of personality. The Sushi was over-priced and average, and actually not-so-fresh. T... read more

Great steamed egg custards & broths for sukiyaki – Kitayama has great ambience. Our servers are always great- the kimonos are a very nice touch, and my husband and I find that charming (he is not Asian, but even being Asian, I find it charming as well). I love having the broth from our sukiyaki with rice at the end of our meal. Also, ask for specialties that are not on the menu- such as their seafood steamed egg custard. It is to die for. If you ask your server what specialties they can offer that night, she will let you kno... read more

Traditional Japanese cuisine served in a glass-walled room surrounded by elegant Japanese gardens. – In Short Kitayama brings nature inside with panoramic views of its private gardens. Modern Japanese lamps and Breuer chairs juxtapose hip design with the waitress' kimonos in the sushi bar and the three tatami rooms. Traditional Japanese offerings include sukiyaki, teriyaki and tempura. A la carte items include crab chawanmushi, a hot custard with fresh crab and shitake mushrooms, or beef shiso rolls, broiled with Asian becha... read more

Our favorite Japanese restaurant in Newport Beach – I have always had wonderful meals at this restaurant. The service has been attentive and the food fresh and flavorful. I love the booths and traditional Japanese dining rooms. Try the Shabu-shabu in addition to the sushi.

Unprofessional/Pretentious Staff – It is truly a shame when the management staff is poorly trained. Their arrogance and rudeness is drilled down to the staff, thus the quality of service is jeopardized. The restaurant itself is aesthetically pleasing and the food is moderately good. The restaurant is ideal for business lunches/dinners but my clients on a number of occasions walked out unhappy due to the substandard service. It is a damper to conduct business in such a negative environment.

Great Japanese food and performance My aunt brought my family to this beautiful Japanese restaurant on one of our last visits to Irvine. The elegance of Kitayama is evident as soon as you approach the entrance from the parking lot, walking across a stone path surrounded by a calming landscape. Inside the windows look out to either a decorated courtyard or the front waterscape where traditional drummers come out to perform on and around the bridge. Patrons are seated at little tables for smaller parties or partitioned rooms f... read more
