The decor of this sushi restaurant deserves a special mention, as the work of designer Phillipe Starck is impressive. The wall features super-large photographs of the eyes and lips of a Japanese woman. The effect is surprisingly stunning, given the place's light brown hues, glass doors, private booths and simple, uncovered furniture. The offerings at Katsuya are similar to the food offered by Chef Katsuya Uechi in the other LA branches. There is a fixed price menu for those who want to try a variety of dishes. I brought my friend here thinking it would be a nice casual after work spot. Unfortunately the spicy tuna on crispy rice was not crispy and the tuna was and very mashed up and warm. We also ordered a crab hand roll and they were very small and not flavorful whatsoever. Both dishes were pricy, yet not worth it. The drinks were decent but I won’t be back.

Probably the worst meal I've had in LA. A couple of okay dishes but lackluster in every single way including the lack of attentive service. I can't believe how busy this place gets but it's a true testament to the "be seen" culture in the city and the real unawareness of what good food actually is. Don't waste your money, there are better atmospheres, food and service in abundance within a few minutes drive either way.
