Dr. Hurlburt is always warm and caring. He has several unusual ways of asking questions to learn more about a patient; he does not make quick decisions about patients or about their diagnoses. I find he is patient with a careful way of receiving information from me, clarifying responses when necessary. It seems to me he has a good sense of humor and can enjoy a wide range of funnies, appropriately, and hopes I can learn/use anything I hear, say or observe in session.
Thoughtful, caring, and insightful. I have seen Dr. Hurlburt for years now. I am proud to have him as a part of my care team.
He does seem to be very judgmental and eager to put a label on you. I found that he also makes empty promises. Shares a lot of personal experiences. Don't really want to know his life story. Not there to make friends. Fine with hearing lessons learned from experience just not the actual experience. Not sure if he's not confident in his skills or what but he constantly referred to having consulted other therapists about me. Made me feel exposed, unsafe. Very judgmental. Talks more about himself than letting patient talk. Eager to use labels on first visit when I didn't get a chance to tell all of the story. Friendly at first but then seems to want to challenge patient and if you disagree, it's a "power struggle." I didn't feel like he was listening; it was as if he had me lumped in a category and it felt belittling, honestly. I tried it a few times but ultimately visits made me feel worse.
Dr. John Hurlburt is caring, considerate and has helped in keeping me on track with a purposeful life.
Dr. Hurlburt is by-far, the most helpful therapist I have ever been too. He's respectful, gives good feedback, and he's relatable. I really enjoy talking to him and learning from him! I always recommend him to friends and family!!
