loved it – This is some of the freshest and most interesting sushi I've ever had. They fly in the fish fresh every day, not twice a week, like most sushi places. My friend and I are very sensitive about fish smells and oily ,fishy-fish tastes. Jack and his staff answered all of our questions, made sure we understood the specials and were accommodated exactly to our palates. Everything from the tuna tartare appetizer to the assortment of sushi including flounder was melt in your mouth, buttery and yummy. They grind fresh wasa... read more

very tasty fish, but a little overpriced – there is a long history at jewel bako. the online reviews and blog foodies all say that it used to be good, but is not now, and that the food and service went downhill. since i didn't go to jewel bako when it first opened, or before they expanded the space, i cannot speak about that. all i can say now is that it's a pleasant experience that i'm glad i tried once. if you want that "perfect" restaurant experience, it is definitely worth going. the service is impeccable, the food and d... read more

Great Sushi – Some of the best tasting sushi I've ever had! And what a great experience and atmosphere. I highly recommend it.

Putting the record straight – Having read some of the comments, I feel I have to leap to the defense of our favorite sushi restaurant. What distinguishes it is the attention to detail - the use of the highest quality ingredients, the hiring of professional staff, and so on. The fish is super fresh, and the presentation of the food on the plate is a work of art. The service is unobtrusive and efficient - you will not be rhetorically asked several times during the course of the meal whether the food is OK, but you will be serv... read more

Go for the Sushi omakase, not the chef omakase – We had a lovely evening at the sushi bar in the back. The staff (almost all Japanese) was very attentive, but I felt like there're too many staffs(men in suits) hanging around in a tiny restaurant. We ordered chef's omakase for $95. The sushi was superb, but the hot dish appetizers were disappointing, as well as the bland desert. Overall, we had a lovely dinner, but I wouldn't recommend the chef's omakase ($95), if i were to go back, I would probable get sushi omakase for $50

Very disappointing sushi-omakase experience – The design of this place is like a jewel box or a space ship capsule. It is cute but results in a very cramped experience. I sat at the bar and could not even talk to my waitress and Jack without killing my neck. Service was very good. With regards to the sushi, food, and sake menu, I have to say that in NYC this place ranks at the very bottom for its price level. The Omakase at $95 was served up with mediocre concoctions at best, the actual sushi was 100% flavorless and the sash... read more

Exceptional sushi – I just went to Jewel Bako for the first time and was rather impressed. The menu was very diverse and had a good selection of unusual fish, however they seemed to be sold out of quite a few of them. I ordered the $50 sushi omakase, the yellowtail sashimi quartet, and sake (I love the jewel tone glasses they serve it in!). Everything was amazing and expertly prepared. I was pleasantly surprised by the sushi: each piece of fish had a tiny dab of complementary sauce on top, sort of Sushi of Gari lite. The onl... read more

It's all about the fish !! – This sushi restaurant is all about the fish! After all, isn't that what eating sushi should be about. Jewel Bako has a new and improved menu. They have added some interesting rolls which can accommodate any palette. I went with a group of people who all had different tastes - some were adventurous and some weren't but yet there was still something for everyone. Some of the other reviews I read on this site were very unfair about the staff. I found them to be very professional and more than happy ... read more
