History The Jaarsma Bakery in Pella, Iowa has been offering delicious "Dutch Treats" since 1889, when it was founded by Harmon Jaarsma who used recipes he brought over as an immigrant from Holland. A hundred years ago, Harmon had two brick ovens in the bakery that were fired with wood. After the ashes were brushed out, the bread was put in to bake, followed by the buns, Dutch Letters, cookies, and finally rusks as the ovens slowly cooled down before re-firing. my Dutch letters fix every holiday season
The Willy Wonka of Bakeries!
Jaarsma is one of my favorite places on the planet. My favorites are the old fashioned cinnamon rolls and bismarcks. My wife loves the Dutch letters, and their bread is amazing. The ladies filling orders are always nice and helpful...and patient when you can't make up your mind.

worth the trip if you are travelling across Iowa on I80...
I live 60 miles from Pella so when I'm in town I make it worth my trip!!! My take usually includes Dutch Letters of coarse, Pecan Tassies, Almond Bankets(at least 3 or more) the wonderful frosted Sugar Cookies(I won't even say how many of those I take) and Almond Butter Cake, too!!! You could say my addiction to Dutch Letters started on my Fifth Grade field trip to Tulip Time!?! I won't say what year that was but it turned me definitely, into a SWEET Foodie!!!
