History The Jaarsma Bakery in Pella, Iowa has been offering delicious "Dutch Treats" since 1889, when it was founded by Harmon Jaarsma who used recipes he brought over as an immigrant from Holland. A hundred years ago, Harmon had two brick ovens in the bakery that were fired with wood. After the ashes were brushed out, the bread was put in to bake, followed by the buns, Dutch Letters, cookies, and finally rusks as the ovens slowly cooled down before re-firing. Jaarsma Bakery was a family tradition growing up. So was the tulip festival and the glockenspiel. Passing through yesterday, we had to stop so I could get my husband a box full of father's day goodies. As I walked in, my first time in probably 20 years, the smells hit my memories like a freight train. I fought back tears as I remembered my grandma's love for the glockenspiel, my father's love for the pastries, and my own excitement to peer into the cases and pick out something delectable. What a blessing! We lived in Iowa 40 years so knew and loved Jaarsma's Dutch Letters well. On our last trip to Iowa we purchased a box of mixed pastries and delivered them to our mother who is 92 and lives in Arkansas. She was so delighted with them that it gave us the ideal of sending her pastries for Mother's Day instead of flowers, which hadn't been the best quality, not to mention didn't always arrive on time.
