Offering sushi, tempura and box meals at discount prices, this is the place to go for Japanese cuisine. It is less crowded than the more popular Southeast restaurants closer to downtown, but it is hard to understand why. With its plain exterior and inexpensive prices, some aficionados may predict a lack of quality, but one glance at the sushi bar will change that. The fish is fresh and expertly prepared. The atmosphere is casual yet traditional. Try the house favorite sushi rolls — Unagi (barbecued eel), Saba (mackerel... read more

Almost Flawless – Ichidai is the by far, the best sushi place in Portland! The sushi is always fresh, delicious, and beautifully prepared. There is an abundant selection of sushi and you can get the special -- three selected rolls of sushi for (currently) $12.75. It comes with cucumber salad and miso soup. The other items on the menu are absolutely superb. Order one of their delectable ice cream for dessert. I recommend the green tea ice cream and mochi ice cream of any flavor -- it's a little piece of heaven! The service is... read more
Aki's crew makes Portland's best Japanese food – I've eaten here for years. The sushi is some of Portland's best (it's here or Restaurant Murata). My favorites include spicy-squid tempura roll (amazing textures), the spanish mackarel and the fresh oysters. Aki gets the best salmon Toro in town, too. Beyond the fish, it's the small things that set this sushi apart, the rice is firm and tart, not too sweet. The nori is crisp and nutty. Even the wasabi seems extra fresh and radishy. The tempura and the noodle dishes are delicio... read more
Yummy! – Ichidai is the best sushi, period, in Portland. The service and the office-building atmoshpere might not be all that inviting, but it is well worth it. I live just a couple of blocks from Saburo's and NEVER eat there. Ichidai is just so much better...Get the cold unfiltered sake to enjoy while the service is slow. I highly recommend their Lobster Scallop roll, the creamy scallops, and the seaweed salad. Even the miso is extra good!
Dry as a bone – I'm no sushi snob, but the rice was WAY too dry, to the point that the maki would crumble at the touch of the sticks. The fish was fresh and tasty, but the nigiri pieces were the size of my pinky. The special roll (tempura salmon+tuna+yellowfish, masago rice) was above par, but everything else was rather mundane to disappointing.
Best Sushi in Portland – I've been to many sushi places in portland and this one is by far the best. They have a number of speciality rolls that definitely top the comp. I recomend the spicy oregon roll, their fatty salmon nigri, the tuna, albacore, and avocado roll, the list goes on and on. Rapid service, good owners/workers. They remember what I like to order. Great prices, 2 eat like kings from the alacarte menu for ~26 with tip.
location, location, location – I started going to Ichidai when they were still on Division St. and have not changed my opinion of their menu -- fresh, tasty, not-so-expensive. Their new place doesn't have the ambiance of the last, and the parking is not so good, but it's worth the drive.
