I have been a loyal customer at this store for 17 years. I love the pharmacy and they know me by name. I didn’t mind paying higher prices bc the convenience of a small store was worth it. My grocery trips average upwards of $300 every couple of weeks. Lately, this store has been a disaster. They keep moving everything around and every time I turn around, they don’t have something I’m looking for. Many times I have bagged my own groceries bc they don’t have enough staff to do it for me. All self checkout = taking my business elsewhere! I have driven past Fareway in Johnston to shop at HyVee - not any more!

We are still staffing our larger registers so that we can continue providing the outstanding customer service that Hy-Vee is known for. That being said, we are still working out the kinks in our system. We are adding signs so you can more easily identify which registers are staffed and we are adding additional large registers. Have always loved this place but now with mostly self checkout I'm done.

I stopped in over lunch to get some sushi. Only self checkouts. I am not an employee, I shouldn't have to know how to ring up my grapes. It took too long for an employee to help me, twice. I will no longer be patronizing your store for anything other than the Starbucks.

My husband went this evening to get our family of six’s groceries and they ONLY had self check out available. The staff were trying their best to be helpful but when you are still ringing up your own groceries and bagging- it’s not smooth. When I went over the weekend there were only two checker manned aisles. Please bring back at least a 50/50 split of self check out and checker manned lanes. This does not work for my large family.

Please bring back the balance you had before with cashiers and self-check out. Self-checkout is fine for quick trips through, but what about people shopping for large families, those with mobility issues, and folks who aren’t as comfortable with technology?

Will not return to Hy-Vee in Johnston as long as every checkout is self serve. I am not your employee!!!!

Joyce, we are still staffing registers every day as we have in the past. They will be the large registers on the south end of the front end that we will have staffed. Our goal was to never be all self checkout, but only to be able to offer a choice to our customers. I'm sorry about the confusion and if there is ever anything we can do, please let us know.

It’s horrible to see stressed out and confused staff standing next to the self check out lanes. It’s no way to treat your staff who risked their health to work during Covid outbreaks. 

Business response:

Thank you for your feedback Andrew. We are still staffing registers just as we have in the past. We have had some software and hardware issues with install causing some issues, but we should be getting these fixed asap. We will always be able to checkout out people as we have in the past, but only offering more options. Sorry for the inconvenience while we get everything fixed and addressed, but I promise we will always have to staff available to help.

Big shout out to the Johnston Hy-Vee! I’ve always found everyone to be helpful but today’s afternoon crew really went above and beyond on an issue I had with my online pickup order. I am so thankful for everyone on the front lines making sure their customers have what they need. I hope the manager of the Johnston store sees this and is able to pass on my sincere thanks and appreciation.
