Overrated, Go to NOLA instead – I concur with some of the other reviews posted so far. Not the worst hotel, but definitely not worth the $150/night paid to stay there. Walls are indeed thin. Service disappointing - no bellhops to unload luggage or open front door, not enough valets. I've stayed in nicer, more elegant historic hotels in New Orleans for much less. Don't expect much - I did and was greatly disappointed. More $ needs to be spent to bring this hotel up to par with other fine hotels. THIS IS NOT A ROMANTIC HOTEL.
Way overrated – I stay at the Hotel Galvez a while back, and I must admit. It was one of the worst hotels I've ever een in. The walls were so thin we could not sleep. We constantly can hear the elevator door bell and we can hear the conversations of people in the hall clearly. The room itself was adequate. The view was horrible (when facing the opposite side of the beach), not a pretty site to see the ghetto of Galveston. Overly priced I think I spent like $120 a one night stay.
George Mitchell – Mr. Mitchell has done a wonderful job renovating this historic hotel on Galveston Island. Mr. Mitchell has done so much for Galveston. The Sunday Brunch at the Galvez is OUT OF THIS WORLD!!!!! Great cuisine and all the champaine you can drink. Made-to order omlets are out of this world.
A Question of Value – Our stay over the weekend was probably nearing the end of the school holiday season, and the reservation folks would not budge off the $199 fare for a standard king. When considering the New Orleans Ritz-Carlton's standard king rate was $135 for the same weekend, you have to raise the value question. I don't pinch pennies, and I realize hotels have to make hay when they can. The hotel service and food at Bernardo's were excellent, but the small rooms and flat pillows just wouldn't let me forget about th... read more
Beautiful Historic Hotel – We loved historic Hotel Galvez!! It was built in 1911! The rooms are a bit small but are lovely. The pool is one of the best I've ever seen-gorgeously landscaped, kid-friendly baby pool with mushroom fountain and kiddie pool furniture, and a swim-up Pool Bar for Mom & Dad! Bernardo's Restaurant was excellent! Try the fresh shrimp & spinach omelettes for brunch! Hotel Galvez is close to everything on the island and the service was outstanding! I was impressed with all of the history in the hotel and... read more
