Let's be realistic, if you came to the Hot Dog Shop you're most likely didn't google "Gourmet Hot Dogs of Houston". So, if you show up expecting this to be a place to bring your kids or your churchgoing parents or grandparents, you've made an odd decision. Upon first approach, it looks like a dive. I am shocked that this place gets such great reviews for food. With the old grease smell from the outside in, to the smell of the bathrooms and bleach when you walk in mixed with the fact that smoking is still allowed in this place. The people are nice but the food is disgusting. I have been there twice as I thought that maybe my first trip was unfairly judged and I needed to give it a second chance. Dingy Eatery – This place is close to my office and I have gone twice because I was willing to give the place a second chance. I did not like my ham and cheese hoagie the first time I went but by coworker was having a burger and I wished I had gotten that instead. Well - I went back for a simple cheeseburger today and it was okay - the meat was a little dry and not flavorful. The fries were nothing special either. Pure Texas Fun! – I visit this hide-a-way at least 4 times a week to get my Vienna Beef Dog fix! Lots of Chicago style food, plus all kinds of other goodies. They have a great bar with things going on ALL THE TIME. Yes they do allow smoking, but have a wonderful clean NO Smoking area as well. Super busy during lunch, but I never wait more than 10 minutes for a good homecooked meal. The staff treats you New York Deli Style, so expect lots of noise, and inner action! Business Booms in H Town! – With all the strange comings and goings of chain eatiers, it's nice to come back to Houston to my favorite hangout. I have been in the oil business for 20 years and had always called The Hot Dog Shop "my place". I moved to Alaska for 2 years but I'm back, and yes "my place" is still churning out the "good stuff"!
