About this business

One of the favorite vegetarian and vegan eateries in San Francisco, this Mission District restaurant offers a wide range of foods. The cuisine is a blend of many different cultures. The menu features items such as an Indian curry with vegetables and rice, and a Texas barbecued tempeh burger. Both indoor and outdoor dining in suitably funky Mission District decor is available. The service is personable and efficient, and the locals crowd this place regularly.

Not a good time – The absolute rudest wait staff - ever. I told one that I have a serious food allergy then she let me order something that contained this ingredient and didn't point it out to me! I was livid - and how can a place that's supposedly selling healthy food be so negligent? Anyway, food ranges from ho hum to good. Hideous ambiance, torturous chairs, and loud.

Avoid anything Asian – Herbivore: brought to you by the folks (Jay's Cheesesteaks, Burger Joint, Wash Quarters) who helped make Valencia an extension of Union St. is now helping gentrify the Western Addition, just like they did the Mission. Sure the service is bad. But the real travesty is that at the only place you can feel reasonably secure that your asian noodles or curry will be free of shrimp paste or fish sauce, these same dishes taste like chef boy-r-dee rejects. If you eat there, stay with the good sandwiches and med... read more

The "other" Herbivore – I've been to Herbivore on Valencia and the one on Divisadero - clearly, the latter is much better in terms of offering, service, ambience. I have been going to this Herbivore and would like to encourage others to do so!

I've been here several times and the most consistent thing I've experienced is their spotty service. Generally unattentive, even if not a lot of customers are there. The food is generally good.

Service Sucks – Although they promptly seated us at our table and initially attended us like a school of monkeys attacking a banana boat, we waited for hours to receive our meal and even longer to pay to get out of this kevorkian nightmare. And, apparently, they believe that they are located somewhere in the middle of the Sahara Desert because they refused to refill our water glasses. In fact, they were the antithesis of WaterWorld.

Average food. Bad service – The food is no better and no worse than most diner food. The service is dreadful.

Pleasant, Inexpensive Meal – I ate at Herbivore with no idea what to expect and I was pleasantly surprised. The wait staff was mellow but definitely not deliquent. Our water was consistantly filled and when my coffee was cooler than I like, I was brought a new cup promptly. The portions were generous and the food was tasty, albeit fairly straightforward. I've only been a vegetarian for 6 months, so I'm not that familar with many other vegetarian or vegan restaurants, but I will definitely eat at Herbivore again. Great price,... read more

Ignored!! – Ask how long a wait it is or you will be ignored!! We were a group of six and waited patiently for more than an hour while tables of 3 and four filled around us with people who had arrived after us! The rude waiters ignored us completley. They were totally oblivious and didnt make an effort at all. We excited about trying the food but ended up leaving in frustration. A little effort would have gone a long way.
