It took 22 years to build the canal from Georgetown, DC to Cumberland, MD. Much of the workforce were immigrants from Ireland and western Europe.

Take the river trail - just to right of falls overlook off the towpath. About 2 miles round trip. Great easy hike for young ones. Saw several deer and birds.

Look at the beautiful falls over the bridge near to the VA side.
No trash cans in the park, be prepared to carry your garbage bag with you.
