FINE ITALIAN COOKING FIRST DAZZLED PORTLANDERS IN 1971, when restaurateur Michael Vidor opened Genoa restaurant on Southeast Belmont Street. Genoa introduced Portland to the cuisine of northern Italy with a two-hour long, seven-course, prix fixe meal experience. Genoa quickly earned a reputation as one of Portland’s premiere fine dining establishments. Simply put, it was the place for special occasions. The menu maintained its elaborate seven-course format until November 2008. From the beginning, Genoa sought out the f... read more

For a special moment – This is an occasion restaurant, so no, "I'm hungry, let's stop at Genoa." Of course it's overpriced, that's the point. All the offerings on the prix fix were delicious; corkage fee is definitely too high. Service a bit snooty, but expected. I'd opt for the seafood as a choice entree.
Best italian in PDX – Most of the negative reviews here must be skewed. Those people have no idea what good italian food tastes like. They are probably the same people that thing The Olive Garden is good "real" italian food. Genoa lacks in ambiance, but easily makes up for it in food. The entire idea around the set menu is great and as it should be; it's how all great restaurants are. I think Portland has a lack of knowledge and experience when it comes to good dining and great food.
se-DUC-tive luscious – if you are considering "value" here, you have it wrong. this place starts with a fifth category, say "experience." you're greeted, and sat comfortably, and before you know, your meal has started; lovely, you haven't even seen a menu. the food is probably delicious. if it's not revelatory, it has good depth. i know all the candlelight and stuffed flowers produce a tranquilizing effect, but like opium, genoa is seductive.
Mediocre at best – I took my wife here for her birthday and I was extremely disappointed, a meal at this price should be exceptional, not just merely digestable. Lack of creativity, presentation and overuse of outside suaces and condiments were the rule of each course. Service was ok, atmosphere was not worth noting.
what service – great atmosphere, food okay, service terrible. Too much time between couses, service inconsistant, it took so long to get to the final couse our water asked if we would vacate the table as they had another reservation waitng. I will never go back again.
A truly wonderful experience EVERY TIME! – Expectations! If you have never been here before, don't expect anything like you have had before-- I'm tired of reading reviews from people who complain that Genoas ISN'T like every other Italian restaurant they have been to. I go to Genoas often, and have consistently been extremely pleased with the high quality of food and changing variety of menu options. It is truly a treat each time, and I would strongly recommend this restaurant to anyone that is in the mood for something new ... read more
Great restaurant for a special occasion – A very strong restaurant. The food was well prepared and the waiter knowledgeable as well as helpful. They have a very good wine list that matched the type of food they serve well. Not a cheap please, but even given this it ranks as a good value for what you get. Come hungery, becasue the food never stops.
Best food in Portland – What a wonderful restaurant! We celebrate every special occasion here & have never been disappointed. The food is always wonderfully different; the staff is knowledgeable about the food and wine; and the ambience wraps it all up in a delightful romantic bundle.
Worth the price! – We have heard the legend for years and finally took the plunge. We were sorely disappointed...that we had not gone years early! It was amazing. Every dish was plate lickable. All 7 courses were prefectly prepared, portioned and presented. We were left wanting more of each course, but by the end we were pleasantly satisfied. Individually, each course was incredible, put together was the best menu we have ever had. It is a great deal at the price compared to the rubbish you can pay for at other so-called top... read more
