About this business

Frontera Grill is the sister establishment of the more well known, Topolobampo next door. Both restaurants are from the celebrated Chef Rick Bayless, however this spot focuses more on casual dining. On weekends, Frontera is always packed, but if you are lucky, you can grab a small stool at the bar with drinks and appetizers before the hostess finds your table. Basic margaritas are quite pricey, but one usually packs enough top shelf tequila to sate the palate before the food arrives. Some of the options on the menu include e... read more

Had supper there tonite as we walked in I came face to face with Rick Bayless the chef and owner of the resto I said hello and said to him we met in Washington when he received the Julia Childs award he just looked at me and walked away... I knew of course he would not remember but it was so rude will not be going back because it was too noisy we could not even talk to each other and the tables are so close .....the food was just ok....

On one of the coldest days of the year we arrived at 440 and they would not let us inside the restaurant yesterday until 5:01, seriously. We have come here so many times and we were disappointed - Rick was there and he didn’t care about his customers waiting outside in subzero temperatures. We were the second family inside the restaurant and then we had to wait another 10 minutes to be seated.

I have been going to Frontera since the late 80's when no one even knew anything about it......a true hidden gem. I went recently and the menu and food for dinner were nothing special. I was sooo disappointed 😔 Maybe I had the wrong thing: steak tacos, gaucomole. The margaritas with 100 proof Agave Tequila was the only "saving grace" for an $80 bill! Everyone there wasn't even from Chicago, they were from out of town, who heard about Bayless from tv or friends.

My husband knew to make a reservation, thank goodness as it was packed! All the staff was friendly, knowledgeable and polite. The food? OMGoodness!!! Everything was delicious......the Tamal Nejo appetizer and the chocolate pecan pie were amazing. The margaritas were also excellent. We all loved the “vibe” - even my 15 year old son. Plan ahead but don’t miss this place!
