There are hardware stores, then there is Frentz and Sons. They understand those of us that repair old things. Better yet, the staff acknowledges guys like me - hungover inventors with an idea crudely scribbled on a bar napkin - and work to help us see this idea to it's completion. This is the store MacGyver would shop at. This is the store MacGyver would open once he retires. Maybe these guys ARE MacGyver?! OMG! MacGyver is real... and he runs a hardware store in Royal Oak.

Frentz is such an amazing place. I’m moderately handy, and they really know their stuff and help make sure I have exactly what I need to do a job. Yesterday I had to replace an outdoor spigot and they don’t carry that type any longer. They helped rebuild a new one right on the spot. No way the big stores would take the time and care to do that.

If you don't know, don't go to the big box stores! Chances are, at the big box stores you won't find what you're trying to fix. Frentz & Sons has been my go-to place for 30 plus years. I too have an old house, and the household hardware is hard to come by. If these folks don't have it, punt and start a new project. The customer service is what you would hope for - helpful, knowledgeable. Bring your problem stuff to them in hand, and they will figure it out. There's a reason they have been rated #1 in Hour magazine for years.... read more
