Partner Scott Chase has been elected Board Chair of the Center for the Advancement and Study of Early Texas Art (CASETA), located at the San Angelo Museum of Fine Art. The mission of CASETA is to promote serious interest in “Early Texas Art” which is art produced by artists who were born in and/or lived in Texas 40 years prior to the present date. CASETA presents an annual Symposium, sponsors local programs, and has an extensive archive of photographs of Early Texas Art.

With heavy hearts, we announce the death of our beloved managing partner and co-founder, Liza Farrow-Gillespie, who passed away on July 3 after a long battle with cancer. Liza was an extraordinary woman who was an incredibly gifted attorney and an even better person. She touched our lives in a special way and we will love and remember her always. In a landmark decision on June 15, the Supreme Court ruled in 𝘉𝘰𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘤𝘬 𝘷. 𝘊𝘭𝘢𝘺𝘵𝘰𝘯 𝘊𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘵𝘺, 𝘎𝘦𝘰𝘳𝘨𝘪𝘢 that federal civil rights law protects gay, lesbian, and transgender workers. The opinion, authored by Justice Neil Gorsuch, concludes that Title VII’s prohibition against discrimination “because of sex” includes gay and transgender employees. “An employer who fires an individual for being homosexual or transgender fires that person for traits or actions it would not have questioned in members of a different sex. Sex plays a necessary and undisguisable role in the decision, exactly what Title VII forbids,” Gorsuch wrote. In view of 𝘉𝘰𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘤𝘬, any employer with 15 or more employees should review its anti-discrimination and anti-harassment policies to ensure the policy is broad enough to cover sexual orientation and gender identity. Employers also should consider appropriate updates to related employee training. Liza Farrow-Gillespie, FGHW's managing partner, has announced her retirement. In her 13 years at the Firm's helm, Liza charted a course of excellence in legal work balanced with kindness and grace. The Firm would not be where it is today without Liza’s vision, wisdom, and hard work. Thanks to Liza’s thoughtful planning, this transition should be seamless to our friends and clients.
