Do not use Family Tree DNA if you want to know your nationality make up. Finding out what nationalities I am was the only thing I was interested in and they did not provide this. I was lured in by false advertising which states: "myOrigins – a visual mapping tool that provides a detailed ethnic and geographic breakdown of where your ancestors came from" They use false advertising and generate false expectations. There was no detail breakdown of my ethnicity. When I asked for my money back I was told sorry no refunds. Do not ... read more
Business response:
We understand your position, and we apologize if your results were not as specific as you had hoped they would be. Our illustrations show the populations we offer and materials on our site describe the reference population clusters that are reflected in our ********* test. Our terms of service, which are linked at the point of purchase and at the bottom of almost every page of our site are also clear about our refund policy.
DO NOT USE FAMILY TREE DNA! IT IS A TOTAL SCAM! I PAID A FORTUNE AND THEY SENT ME RESULTS THAT I CANNOT EVEN OPEN ON ANY COMPUTER. YOU HAVE TO B E A GENETICIST TO UNDERSTAND THE RESULTS OF THE LITTLE YOU CAN SEE, BECAUSE THEY ARE JUST CODES. WHAT AVERAGE PERSON KNOWS THAT?! I CALLED THE COMPANY AND NO ONE GETS THE PHONE. I EMAILED THEM AND THEY DO NOT REPLY. I WILL NOW HAVE TO CONTACT MY CREDIT CARD COMPANY AND REPORT IT. WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT!
Business response:
We apologize for any confusion you've experienced. We replied to your email within about a day and a half of you sending it with a full explanation of the test results. The file you mention is the raw data, not your matches, maps, and ancestral origins that comprise the bulk of your personal page. Here is the FAQ page on mitochondrial DNA, which may help you better understand what you purchased. https://www.familytreedna.com/products/mt-dna#/compare
FamilyTreeDNA is probably the most innovative company to offer direct-to-consumer DNA testing. They are the only DTC DNA company to create an infrastructure for their customers such that the customers can start their own DNA projects and conduct their own scientific research. This far-sighted policy underlies the ethos of the company and has created a generation of citizen scientists. No other company has fostered the development of this branch of science more than FTDNA. I run over 20 such projects with the company and thei... read more

Thank you for your kind words of support!
FTDNA, Family Finder DNA testing and their sister co. My Heritage are merely a means to get cheap raw dna results to download. I ordered 1`st from My Heritage and then transferred to FTDNA. They left out about 30% of my known and verified history. It's as if they want to just give people the most vague and dumbed down versions of their histories. But even then, they were missing 30% ! I then took my results to GedMatch and Dr. **** ********, who is an esteemed expert in DNA testing and results interpretation. Along with thes... read more

Thanks for your feedback regarding myOrigins, our autosomal admixture report which is only one part of the Family Finder test. People who are testing for genealogy or to find birth families may find those reports interesting but they are not the main reason to take the test, genetic matches are. Each company does have its own analysis algorithm as well as its own set of reference populations, so the information provided by each will understandably be different. Showing 98% European admixture doesn't automatically translate t... read more
I started the ******* ******* DNA Project in early 2002. With all the past business failures over the years, in terms of genetic-genealogy testing laboratories, it makes me wonder where all the hundreds of "surname DNA Project currently hosted by FTDNA" would be today without the continuity and on-going support of Family Tree DNA of Houston, Texas who, without any doubt, provides the widest range of genetic-genealogy testing products in the world today. In addition, I cannot say enough about the on-going support of ****** **... read more
Business response:
Thank you, ***! We appreciate all the work you've done over the years to further research on the Lindsay surname.
I ordered and paid for FTDNA test kit. Have received NO CONFIRMATION email as promised: payment has cleared my bank. Not able to log in with my "test code" number. Tried to reset password (in case I goofed) No reset email received. Tried calling contact phone number: 20 minutes on wait line. No answer. As far as I'm concerned, I paid for a service and have been "ripped off"! I want a refund so I can purchase a kit from a different company. How do I even make a request when FTDNA can't be contacted?
Business response:
Hello! Please check your email. I've responded directly to your issue. We show that four emails were delivered to you but not opened, so it's likely that they're in your spam folder or your *** has a strict filter on automated emails. We apologize for the wait on the phone, but we are in the middle of a record-breaking holiday sale so it does sometimes take a while to get through by phone even though we've added staff. I also tried to call you but was not able to reach you. Please don't hesitate to respond directly to my per... read more
First in my family to test, procedure was simple and results were timely. I subsequently purchased a test for my mother and will purchase for others in my family over the holidays.
I am posting this review exactly 24 hours after making a purchase from the Family Tree DNA website. I am totally dissatisfied with my customer service experience with this company. I had ordered and subsequently processed a AncestryDNA kit through Ancestry.com earlier this year. I wanted to upload my raw DNA data retrieved from the Ancestry.com website onto the Family Tree DNA website and get an Ethnic Makeup result from Family Tree DNA for only $19 (called an Autosomal DNA transfer). When I originally followed the indicated... read more

We apologize for any inconvenience or frustration you've experienced. While technically the refund policy was followed, not every case is the same and you should have been issued a full refund. I've requested that for you and because of the frustration, I've unlocked the additional transfer features for you at no charge. The refund should be processed within 2 business days on our end. Again, we apologize for your inconvenience.
I ordered test kit from Family Tree DNA on 8/10/17. Received kit and mailed back swab samples on 8/15/17. On 10/16/17 received email from Family Tree informing me of a "technical issue" resulting in delay of test results for another 4-6 weeks.. I called customer service and was told a mistake was made while doing test and they had to redo testing for results. I was assured that whatever the "technical issue" was would not affect the accuracy of the test. Finally received test results on 11/9/17 via email. Was very disappoint... read more
