Established in July 2004, our desire was to create a contemporary-yet-authentic Indian restaurant. Our intent was to have you enter Essence of India and encounter a comfortable, casual feeling that was welcoming and sophisticated, all at the same time. We imported most of what you see in the dining area. From the table ware to the Indian artifacts that surround you, we want you to experience a culinary and cultural passage to India. We serve North Indian food that can be tailored, spice wise, to your individual taste. Indian... read more

This restaurant was essentially empty when we arrived and while we were eating only two other customers arrived. The food was alright. The only thing was was quick was the nan (Indian bread) that we did not consume was wisked from the table and taken to the kitchen before we could ask for a container to take with us. I've never had a restaurant not ask if we wanted to take the extra bread at the end of the meal. Its not like it was something provided by the restaurant as they charge for everything!
Very friendly staff and by far the tastiest Indian food in the City!
Friendly staff! Had read reviews prior to a Chicago visit and enjoyed the food and the service. Note: they tend to go lighter on spices. I found my request for “medium” spiciness was very mild. I probably could have gotten away with just asking for “spicy”
I came to this place because of all the good reviews. I have been to many an Indian restaurant all over the world, and there are better places in Chicago hands down. If it's your first time having Indian or you've only been here it's fine probably. I found the chicken korma to be inedible, the vegetable samosas did not taste fresh, and they traded out my chicken korma for tikka masala which wasn't great. Overall the dishes were either too sweet or bland. Can't say I'll be back. :(
Essence of India has a 4.3 star rating with 526 reviews.
