El Mexico Cafe has been a staple for delicious Mexican fare in Wichita for decades. Their specialty is the Monterey Especial, which is a tostada topped with pulled pork, jalepenos, and green olives. Other dishes worth sampling include tamales, guacamole, and tacos. It's a casual spot, great for a laid-back lunch or dinner.

Absolutley horrible! I cannot stand this place. I've been a few times because for some insane reason my in-laws love it, but I just hate it--I hate their cheese, I hate the flavor of their sauce..I just hate it! I don't know about their American food, because I keep trying to find decent Mexican food here, but so far have come up empty. Maybe next time they all go I can be sick?
Not poor service, no service! I came in and sat down around 4:00p.m. saturday. Hostess said that waitress would be around to take my order. I waited there with no chips, no water, for ten minutes. While waiting the guy at register looked over a couple of times and two waitresses walked by me. This is really disgusting. As I got up to leave the hostess asks, "has she came by to take your order" my reply "nope" and walked out. Why would I want food, that will probably sit at the window for 10 minutes or so going rotten. I don'... read more
You call that salsa?! That is absolutely the worst salsa I have ever had!It was like water. You couldn't keep it from running off the chip to get it to your mouth. The food wasn't much better. Its hard to screw up Mexican food, but this comes as close as I have ever tasted. simply terrible.

Gets my vote for the WORST! After seeing the commercials for this place, I was looking forward to trying it. What a disappointment! The first guy that took our drink order was dripping sweat! Gross! We had to laugh when our 'salsa' and chips arrived. Our 'salsa' was watered down tomato juice! I ordered the taco and 2 enchiladas. The taco was a ball of sweet meat with no spice at all, some wilted lettuce that should have been throw away a couple days before and a GLOB of cheese! Horrible! The enchiladas were the same thing on... read more
We ate there for the first time last night and thought the food was great. The atmosphere was great with live music. The food was wonderful we all had something different and it all was good everyone was eating off each others plate to get the taste of it all. We would recommend it to all that love Mexican food. We will definitely go back again.
READ THIS BEFORE GOING TO EL MEXICO CAFE – First of I want everyone to know that is a bad place to work. My sister, and friend worked at EL Mexico Cafe when it was on Harry neaar Broadway. They hire under age kids to work and they pay the employees with personal checks. We had to ask and ask about getting a paycheck stub. Finally after calling the Department of labor we got a paycheck stub. Then at the end of the year we tried to do taxes but they never got anything back. Later we found out that they were taking taxes out bu... read more
I am an out of towner and was turned on to the place by a local. Food is great, typical Mexican, American menu. They serve nice size portions with quick service at a reasonable price. The wait staff is laid back very casual, they make you feel like a regular. The place looks a lot better since they revamped the interior. Did find a tooth pick left in my taco once (ouch). All and all great place for good lunch.
Authentic Mexican Food – If you've ever eaten the everyday food in Mexico, you know it is not super hot or spicey. The hot stuff is Tex-Mex. It's OK, but I prefer authentic Mexican food. El Mexico is an unpretentious purveyor of genuine Mexican food. (The only deviation would be the use of ground beef in some entrees.) The decor is "functional Mexico". The service is good. The prices are quite reasonable. Perhaps the best recommendation is the number of Mexican people that are eating there. My only warning is to be sure your... read more
