Even though the Mission District is known to house San Francisco's premiere Mexican food, it is important to know which establishments are best. Look no further than El Metate, home to the Mission's arguably best Mexican. The menu highlights include the fish tacos, vegetarian burritos and the quesadilla suiza. With substantial portions, great guacamole and crispy chips, you will surely be asking for "mas por favor" before the meal ends.

best fish tacos in town – friendliest staff in the city!
Good burrito – They have a really good chicken burrito. And the staff is nice too. It is located in random corner of the mission, they've expanded their dining room space significantly next door.
Best home-made Mexican food in the Mission – These folks know how to make their burritos. Everyone who works there is part of the same family, and you get a great vibe. We eat here at least once a week - the fish tacos are fantastic!
yummy fish tacos! – We had amazing fish tacos and quesadilla here and wouldn't mind having more. : ) Parking was a bit laborious but this spot was definitely worth it. Don't be fooled, for the handicap entry there are another set of doors that can accomodate someone in a wheelchair..
This Mexican gem lights up the Mission with its innovative twists on the burrito. – In Short El Metate's enormous burritos push the boundaries of the standard Mission taqueria. Freshly steamed tortillas are stuffed with unusual fillings, such as a vegetarian melange of freshly sauteed zucchini, carrots and broccoli, and the shrimp special, a blend of beaten egg and chopped shrimp, topped with nopales in a spicy red sauce. Traditionalists will enjoy the twice-cooked pork carnitas, which are tender yet slightly crispy on the e... read more
Yu-um! – Ok, I've only been here once, but it was fantastic! Great nachos...but that's not too hard....and the BEST pork tamale I have ever had! Normally tamales are light on the fillings...but not here. Plus, you can't go wrong with the prices!
Great tastes! – Ok, it has a very limited menu, but it does have charm and a lot of flavor. I had the shredded pork torta with all the fixings and it was delicious! I'll definitely go back to check it out...
Donde esta el sabor? (where's the flavor?) – A Mexican gem? No precious gem here. Bland food. No flavor. I suppose if you wanted Latin American food disguised to be Mexican food then go for it. Everyone else here seems to like it but as a taqueria zealot, I was very disappointed. Where's the pozole or menudo? Not to be found. Keep driving.
So cheap and soooo good – El Metate is in my neighborhood, so I go there all the time. After trying out other taquerias in the area, I realized how much better than they are than everywhere else. I think I have been spoiled from being just a couple blocks away from there. I highly recommend the burritos, quesadillas, tacos, and probably everything else on the menu. Very friendly, quick service, and great food! Not a sit down place due to the limited seating, but if there's room, squeeze in and make yourself at home.
