I believe in developing good communication with my patients and their family members to ensure each patient is able to actively participate in decisions about their care. Beginning with the initial consult, I try to focus on the needs of the whole person and how their current medical issue and treatment plan might affect their everyday lives.

Good
Dr Smitherman is excellent and caring as a provider. I am dealing with a serious issue and she gave me good guidance and ways forward. This issue is difficult and painful, so I am happy she will be taking my concerns to a board of experts in October. I am eager to begin treatment, and have chosen Dr Smitherman to do this.
Very knowledgeable and understanding about a very scary procedure l must have done to my spine. Outlined procedures to be done in preparation for surgery but always reminded me it will be my choice to have it done. I like her very much.
Dr Sheila Smitherman saved my son’s life 15 years ago tonight. He had a motorcycle accident and sustained severe head injuries. She operated on him several times during her residency. She’s the absolutely best at her profession. Thank you Dr Smitherman. Tove Ryan
I feel great after one day of surgery.
Before my sister's brain tumor surgery, Dr. Smitherman called me and my wife and told us what she hoped to accomplish. We felt like she had all the time in the world to talk to us. The tumor was large and she didn't exaggerate the expected outcome. (My 80-year-old sister was showing signs of dementia and we hoped some of that would go away.) After the surgery she was to go to a rehab facility for two to three weeks of therapy. Well, the procedure was so successful my sister went straight back to her assisted living facility ... read more
My experience with Dr. Smitherman was excellent, she is an extremely competent neurosurgeon, trust her, she can fix you. She shares with you her recommended procedure completely, listens to your concerns and answers your questions completely. Her post op visits went very well and I was very satisfied. This review I am writing 6 years following a C2 thru C7 fusion Dr. Smitherman did for me May, 2014.
If I could, I’d leave at least 10 stars! I needed a laminectomy. Dr. Smitherman has a delightful bedside manner! She discussed all the options and I did try another approach which did not work. I went back to Dr. Smitherman and scheduled surgery. It immediately solved a 35 year problem with constant and painful sciatica that landed me at times in a wheelchair. Haven’t had any problem since. If I need her services again, I will not walk, but run to her! I trust her completely, and she will be quite honest with you if surgery ... read more
Dr. Smitherman takes the time to explain your options. I liked it when she said I could have P/T, injections, or she could fix my problem, a herniated disk pressing on my spinal cord. After years of pain and suffering, she was true to her word, she fixed it. She has a wonderful bedside manner, she really seems to care, and nurses I talked with praised her as the best in her field in the area. I trust anything this doctor says, and I highly recommend her.
