He has only his opinion and will not consider alternatives other than surgery. I question him on alternatives and his answers was, 'Would you like to consult with a surgeon?' When I answered 'No', he ended the appointment and sent a registered letter banning me from the clinic. It appears to me, it is either his way or the highway. DO NOT go to him unless you want surgery.
My son was having issues out of town at college. He couldn’t see a Gastro there for weeks. We got him back to Lexington and Dr. Merkley was able to see him the next day. He truly listened to my son and his symptoms. He made a plan to investigate and scheduled two procedures the very next day. Many physicians would have given up but Dr. Merkley kept digging and found the source of the problem. Dr. Merkley has an excellent bedside manner. He was easy to talk to and very attentive when I was explaining to him about my abdominal pain. I am feeling so much better now thanks to him! I have also told family members to see him for their stomach problems.
You will not find a more attentive and compassionate doctor. I went to Dr. Merkley for a second opinion and ended up making him my primary Gastroenterology doctor. During my first visit he documented everything I said and my concerns. A+++ doctor!
