About this business

With a menu full of flavorful dishes, all served without a pinch of pretension, Dosa has established itself as one of the top choices for those seeking a bite to eat in the Mission District. The menu specializes in South Indian dishes, especially in the restaurant's namesake dish, the dosa. In addition to the fresh samplings on the plate, this restaurant is also famed for its excellent wine menu, and the pairings that serve to bring out the best of both food and drink. Even with so many other restaurants in the area, DOSA is... read more

Authentic food wrapped in Mission hipness – We brought a friend who is from Bombay here, and he said the food was 'excellent'. I have had my fair share of dosas and idli in India myself and had to say the quality and presentation were out of this world. I'm used to eating Indian in more 'down home' settings, ie metal trays in very boring settings. Dosa gets it right for the Mission hipsters - the lighting and decor is right on. Also the prices are decent - I think my dosa was $7. Will go again and recommend to friends

User review by judyp27 – It's great to have a south indian restaurant in the city with a great ambiance and great prices. The masala dosas were great and so was the lamb curry.

Good Food, Incredibly Lousy Service – Though other patrons were served dishes in a timely manner, we slowly starved at the bar. Nary a waitperson or bartender bothered to check on whether we wanted another drink or more lentil wafers. Twenty minutes later, our appetizers arrived. We sat for another thirty minutes waiting for our main course. Finally, a bartender approached us and asked if we wanted anything else, to which we replied that we would like the food we ordered, and asked if we could have some lentil wafers while w... read more

User review by deshazo – The food is amazing and like nothing you have ever had, unless you are from South India. Service is amazing and friendly.

Indian Food - great setting – The paneer dosa - a must try. My family loved the Chennai chicken - crispy and tender with the right amount of spices and flavor. Discovered it on our trip to San Fransico. Thanks guys for the great experience of having South Indian food in a chic setting, good choice of music and waitresses who made great recommendations. Will definately visit it on our next trip to SF.

Surprisingly Magnificent – Being of Caucasian decent, I have been called "Meat & Potatoes" in the past. Generally my favorite foods are steaks, pasta, pizza, etc... I was surprised at how magnificent the food was at Dosa. An amazing range of tastes and dishes that was delightful for a person who doesn't venture outside of his comfort zone very much. The lamb curry and the numerous types of chutney were my favorites. While dining we met both the owners and they were delightful people (as well as the rest of their staff). Grea... read more

Hot Hot Hot! This Dosa is way cool... – For this white boy from upstate NY nothing could be further from my experience than authentic south Indian cuisine, however that's one of the reasons I moved to San Francisco. My friends invited us out to Dosa for shot of cultural exploration and the whole affair was the perfect blend of cool drinks, spicy food and gorgeous atmosphere. try the soju cocktails, I love the Chai Russian!

Finally, a place I can call my own! – Yes!!!! Having grown up as an American in New York City in a family of South Indian immigrants Ive finally found a place I can call my own. The food is about as close as it gets to the dishes Ive had at home and on my visits to South India. And the hip atmosphere and decor resonated with my sensibilities as a first-generation American. The dosas (their signature dish) and the sambar, which is an essential accompaniment, were definitely one the best Ive ever hadeither here or in India. On... read more

Delicious South Indian Cusine - very unique – Loved the food. I'd never had south Indian cusine or dosa's for that matter. I can't remember the names of the dishes, but my favorite was the lamb curry, dosa's with the chick peas, dosa's with the cheese, and the sampler dosas. The only problem is the tables are too small for the large plates and bowls. They should stagger the dishes out so there is room to be able to eat. We felt rushed to finish a dish to make room. The portions are great for 4 people to share.
