My mother had COPD and was on hospice but she was NOT in crisis AND this hospice team had clear instructions to intervene if antibiotics or hospital treatment was needed, for example with UTI, pneumonia etc. Her "care team" (a nurse who didn't make a single visit to the group home to assess my mom, nor did she ever reach out to myself or my aunt, both medical POAs for my mom) advised mom's group home to give morphine for a breathing exacerbation instead of evaluating for pneumonia. I’ve always genuinely suggested to friends and family to do their homework when it comes to choosing a hospice, palliative team, rehab or assisted living. So many of them offer the same services, but they do not all treat our loved ones with the dignity and respect they deserve. Don't be afraid to ask the questions. Trust your gut.
