great place! wonderful service – ciao vito is one of my favorite places. great service, great drinks, great food - what more could you want? the antipasti is wonderful, the spaghetti is simple and good, the atmosphere is warm & relaxing whether you're there for a fancy dinner or happy hour. highly recommended.
Exceptional rustic Italian cuisine in the up-and-coming Alberta neighborhood. – In Short Once a greasy-spoon diner, this spot has been completely reincarnated as a chic neighborhood trattoria. Patrons pass the gleaming open kitchen and settle in at the airy bar, or head to the subdued dining room, lined with comfy banquettes and chocolate-colored wainscoting. Chef Vito Dilullo puts forth rustic Italian food using market-fresh, local ingredients. Entrees include pasta carbonara with house-made pancetta, as well as the mixed s... read more
Just okay – I love the loud open kitchen ambience. Very nice over the phone taking reservations. Very attentive staff. The food however was just okay. I had the crepellini- italian crepe with wild mushrooms and asparagus. I didn't taste any mushrooms- and it was very dry- no trace of the bechamel sauce promised. Perhaps it was overcooked- it steamed all through the meal. The steaks looked good- the Halibut with olive tapenade looked really good- but the broccoli side was infused with an olive flavor as well. The razor clams ... read more
DOUBLE check your reservation. – I called to confirm a reservation for four of us an hour prior. They had no record of it and weren't able to suggest any other alternatives. The reservation was made one week prior with all the usual names, phone numbers, etc.
Not what I expected, but pretty darn good – I was a little disappointed in the lack of pasta dishes on the menu. The spaghetti with marinara was not much better than I could make at home, but the nightly special (filet mignon with mashed potatoes) was great! The selection of wine was almost overwhelming (in a good way), but the server was very informative and offered a suggestion, their house red wine, which was excellent. The shades on the windows did not block the setting sun, which made conversation across the table awkwa... read more
A few quibbles, but the food was very good – When the razor clams arrived, the presentation was of little concern. They were absolutely delicious, perfectly cooked, obviously fresh and robust clams. Mashers with a hint of horseradish were great. Beets were good. We got parked in a corner right under the speaker and the Sinatra soundtrack was way too loud and distracting, but someone in the staff noticed and turned the volume down before folks requested so. Being stuck in a corner table near the restroom door certainly didn't... read more
Misled by the hype – Softly lit with chandeliers and candles. We were excited to try it. The soft lighting made it nearly impossible to read the very small print on the menu and wine list. We tried to discuss the menu but could not hear each other over the din. The concrete floors, wood tables and chairs, and undraped windows, created a loud and unpleasant environment for dinner for two. The food was also disappointing in its presentation. An entree of razor clams delivered perfectly cooked and quite good razor clams, but th... read more
Added to My List of Portland Favorites – My sister and I tried Ciao Vito on our way home on a rainy Saturday night. We chose to sit at the bar, which serves the full menu, since we would have had a long wait without reservations. The bartender did a great job doubling as a waitress. We chose three appetizers, the antipasti, warm onion tart and butternut squash soup. All three choices were generously portioned and definitely worth savoring. The atmosphere was cozy and friendly and we never felt rushed to leave. The entire sta... read more
