Best known for its Muffuletta (which has been featured on the PBS special, "Sandwiches You Will Like"), this Italian deli-grocer has been owned by the same family since it opened in 1906. For the uninitiated, this is the place to acquaint yourself with the classic Muffuletta, a massive round loaf stuffed with Italian meats, cheeses, olives, and more. Central Grocery has become more of a grocer than a deli over the years (the Muffuletta is the only sandwich you can order prepared) and offers towering shelves of imported goodi... read more

NOT the best muffalettas in town – Best muffalettas in town, please... give me a break, this place had a true New Orleans flair, I'll give it that, with its wooden floors and down home feel, but the sandwich was WAY overpriced for the amount and quality of the meat that they use. WAY more bread than meat. I just must not like the olive relish thing at all because I scraped mine off the sandwich, which was really greasy. It was edible, but not worth the wait, the money or the effort. I did pick me up some Crazy Janes Seasonin... read more
The place for oversized, overstuffed, delicious muffulettas. – The Scene This crowded storefront just off the Mississippi River is really more like an old-time Italian deli than a restaurant. Shelves are piled high with pastas, canned mushrooms, sardines, tomato sauces and the like, but locals swear by the house specialty: plate-sized muffulettas. Don't look for tables here; diners sit on bar stools at long wooden countertops. If the crowds are too thick, consider taking your food to go and finding a bench along the river. T... read more
Best muffalettas in town! – Still think this place has the best muffalettas in town! For $6 you get an enormous sandwhich for two that hits the spot for lunch. It is really a grocery store so don't expect much for ambience. However, great place to stop in for lunch. A must stop in the French Quarter. Good place to buy all those gifts for friends back home. Spices, cajun mixes, Cafe Du Monde coffee, etc.
Just Plain YUM!! – The minute you walk into the place the good smells almost ovrewhelm you. Even tho it's in the middle of the quarter I've found the prices to be very reasonable. Don't leave NO without a jar of the Mufaletta Olive Salad (you'll never find it back home) - and if you get a mufaletta to go for your plane ride back to reality everyone will want to know what you're eating. This is definitely a big "don't miss" on the NO tour!!
GOOD, BUT? – I have been to CG several times over the past 10 years and I agree with all the other reviews. Yes they are pricey at 9$, yes the quality of the meat and the quantitiy has declined a bit, but the olive topping is what makes their muffaleta so good. I did the muffaleta comparison and while some may have more meat or better meat, the over all experience at CG is still top notch. I would recommend it over several others I have tried.
Muffel the Muffuletta – The Muffuletta here isn't very good. It's a mix of cold cuts on a large round sesame seed bun and an olive paste spread. If you decline the olive mix the sandwitch is very dry. The hot sauces sold here can all be found in the French Market a couple of blocks away for less money. The seating area is a small 1950's style sandwitch counter in the back. This place is very small and crowded.
Just The Best – The Muffuletta is the best sandwich I ever had, delicious, tastefull, the olive salad is outstanding. The service isn`t much but the grocery is very nice, I spent hours buying things to eat and to cook.
Mouth Full of Muffulatto – Actually, the best muffulatto I have ever tasted. The olive salad is the perfect combination to the Italian meats and cheeses piled on the fabulous bread! Stepping into Central Grocery is like stepping back in time!
NO NO NEXT DOOR – Its okay, but the staff is rude and caters to the tourists only now. Best to go to Progresso just next door for better service and better prices.
Central Grocery has a 4.6 star rating with 4,154 reviews.
