Best known for its Muffuletta (which has been featured on the PBS special, "Sandwiches You Will Like"), this Italian deli-grocer has been owned by the same family since it opened in 1906. For the uninitiated, this is the place to acquaint yourself with the classic Muffuletta, a massive round loaf stuffed with Italian meats, cheeses, olives, and more. Central Grocery has become more of a grocer than a deli over the years (the Muffuletta is the only sandwich you can order prepared) and offers towering shelves of imported goodi... read more

Worst Customer Service – I'm a local customer who has never seen anyone at this business give any type of great customer service. I have never seen any of the owners and staff that work there ever smile while assiting customers. They never say hello or "Thank You" for your business. Yes, the muffalettas are good, but please appear to be happy about the product your are selling. I just wish they treated thier customers with a warm and gracious greeting and a little "Thank You" when you complete your transaction. I have never ... read more
Original and Best Mufellatta – Absolutely the best Mufellattas in the world. They invented them, so how on earth could they be wrong? The person writing about cheap ingredients and saving money is way off base. One couldn't be more insanely ignorant about a classic culinary creation.
Save your money! Go some place else! – As a local New Orleans resident, this was once a great place to grab a bite to eat, but it has forgotten that it's the locals that made it famous. This place has replaced the high quality foods it once used with boiled ham, swiss cheese, and stale bread. The olive salad isn't the old recipe, but a cheaper one. They have cut corners every which way and rasied prices to boot!
"The" Muffuletta Shrine! – Do not visit NO, without going to Central Grocery. I don't know how many years it has existed, but it is the home of the Mufuletta. Philly has the CheeseSteak, Memphis, the BBQ, but the Muffuletta rules here. We just usually get a half, and waddle back to our hotel for an afternoon nap. The store has a very large selection of gourmet goodies to take back to your hometown. Always crowded, and fun. Love it!
best muffulettas – Best muffulettas in the country, if your in NO you have to go by this historical location. Be open and try everthing on the menu.
Great Sandwich – Best Muffaleta anywhere. Too much to eat you will take it home. Not a great ambience but good food.
#1 sandwich – Haven't been to NOLA since 2004 but the last week or so I've had the sandwich in my daydreams consistantly, I think next weekend will do the trick. My three favorites are C G in Nawlins, Chubbys BBq in Hayti MO. and mariasseafood in Ft, Myers Fl.
BEST MUFFELATTAS IN N.O. (taylor30350 is WRONG!) – Central grocery has wonderful mufellattas and AWESOME olive salad. These mufellattas MUST be the best, because they are the ORIGINAL!!!! Don't trust negative reviews, they are only from people who don't know what a mufellatta should actually taste like!!! (And, trust me, they can't be from N.O. either!!!)
#1 muffaletta – the absolute best place for muffalettas. great cultural spot, a true new orleanian place-loaded with good italian eats!
Central Grocery has a 4.6 star rating with 4,333 reviews.
